Recommendations for networking win/xp +win98 no ethernet

Am helping out a neighbour who has just got a new win/xp desktop but wants to retain his old win98 machine also. XP machine has USB and Ethernet, but 98 machine has USB & no ethernet.
XP has printer and scanner attached, would like to have 98 machine able to sent to printer. Ideally would like 98 machine to get access to scanner, but OK if scanning happens on XP machine and result available to 98 machine (e.g as shared file).
XP machine has internet dialup, would be nice but not essential for 98 machine to share connection.
Can anyone recommend best approach to networking these machines? They are about 15 feet apart. Would prefer to make minimal changes on 98 machine. How about USB networking?
Thanks
Martin

Buy a £5 Ethernet card & some ethernet cable and connect the two together.

Use the network wizzard on the XP PC to setup both PCs (you can create a disk on the XP machine that will setup the 98 PC).

Enable file and print sharing on both

Run ICS on the PC which has the USB modem on.

Your best and cheapest option here would be to buy an ethernet pci card for the windows 98 machine and a length of cat 5 network cable both of which can be purchased cheaply

Once this is fitted its just a matter of setting up the two machines to talk to each other (network)

The 98 machine can easily be configured to share the printer and internet connection that xp is using once the network is setup

regards
Bill.

When I did it, I needed to setup the Windows 98 machine with a logon password not just autologon without it.
There is apparently a way round this but I didn't find it.

Thanks, that's what we will do.
Thanks to holtlane for password hint.
Are there any other gotchas I should look out for on the 98 box?

When I did it I used this guide as in my case I wanted XP to use an existing network
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/wxpwin9x.html
If you want to configure the Windows 98 machine to work on an XP network you could use the XP Wizard and create a floppy to run on the windows 98 machine. It is supposed to work but then again its Microsoft so who knows
