RAM Laptops and OS

Hi

I'm looking for a laptop. PC World and Tesco both have very cheap models for sale but with only 256MB RAM. Is this enough to run Windows XP Home Edition? Am I missing something?

Do I need Centino? What is it anyway?

256 can run xp but you are best off wtih 512meg or 1gig (you can easily upgrade the ram in laptops -- you just need to get some SODIMMS (the ram for laptops) and slot it in -- usualy you have to unscrew a back plate to reveal 2 dim slots.

A centrino is/was a chipset from Intel that included wireless into your laptop and a mobility CPU (uses less power) -- it was the marketing idea of using a laptop anywhere, anytime.

what ever you do, do not get a Celeron, they fail at everything. Look to get a Pentium M chip or a Pentium Core Duo (soon to be replaced with the pentium core duo 2 -- conroe)

look to acer / asus / dell for good cheep laptops.

As for upgrading RAM; sometimes one of the RAM slots can be located under the keyboard so you'll need a manual to find out how to take the laptop apart. Also you'll need to know how many chips are involved: if it's one @ 256 then buying 256 will give you 512: however if it's 2 x 128 then they'll have to be binned and 512 purchased.: laptops have RAM slots.
I usually buy HPs through Ebuyer...as was previously mentioned don't buy a Celeron chipped machine: go for a Centrino or Athlon64. Centrino is just a marketing name for Intel for their wireless chip and a Pentium M processor in combination.

Thanks for the advice. It's much appreciated.

I'll be looking to buying a laptop next month because of unexpected expenses this month.

If you fancy running Linux on your laptop, avoid Acer because there are issues with their keyboard handling and interrupts from acpi and the like causing apparent "key sticking" in Xwindows-- a right pain I can tell you!
