Hi all

I have been keeping files on a Linksy NSLU2 (samba server) which crashed after a power fail. I restored from a m$back up on an external hdd to another hdd in a 2k machine and do not seem to be able to gain ownership or gain perrmissions of the files to alter or deleteHuh? Cheesy Cheesy

When you set permisions on a file it sets the permisions up with a SID which is the pc's version of your username. The SID is created when your acount is created . If you deleted your account and then added one with the same name the SID would be different.

This is what has happened if you saved the files as fred on pc 101news and you have now put it on a pc called newpc it cant find the SID for a fred on pc 101news.

If you are in as admin you should be able to right click on the folder choose properties then security and you should see a strange number that has full control. Try and set the permisions on the admin to full control if this doesnt work choose advanced and select owner and change the ownership to yourself/admin make sure you set it on sub dirs as well.

That should solve it make sure the owner has full control
