PCI express for new PC

I am going to buy a new PC probably based on an AMD 64 3500 S939 1 Gb RAM.
The PC is for spreadsheets, internet, share charting programs and an optimization type program which takes some time to run.
Would PCI express be of any benefit to me or is it mainly for "games" PC's.

Unless you intend to do very intensive 3D graphics a-la-games, PCI express will give you no benefit at all. In fact, current PCI express speeds are no faster that the current AGP8X and PCI express boards are very thin on the ground and VERY expensive compared to equivelent AGP cards.

I would stick with AGP for now, PCI Express will not become maintsream for several years yet.

I'm not sure why you want to fork out so much when your requirements are not so demanding.

PCI Express will become more mainstrean in less than several years I would have said but you definitely do not sound like you need it at this time or will do in the near future.

Get a nice reliable Intel board and P4 CPU (top end not necessary). Can't go wrong there.
