Network card/Ethernet modem IP address problems

Hi,
have changed from a usb adsl modem to using an X-modem ethernet adsl modem connected to onboard Nvidia network card.
Had loads of problems with it not working when set to obtain an ip address automatically.
If I put in the ip address and dns address then it would connect otherwise I got invalid ip and it showed as ip 0.0.0.0
Anyway, I then enabled DHCP client in windows XP services and then no more problems.
Address now assigned by DHCP and it shows as 100 Mbps everytime.
Only thing is I have to enable the connection(double click the adapter icon) to connect.
Do I have to have it using DHCP?
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
