My domain has been hijacked by spam emails

As the tile says, my domain appears to have been hijacked by spam emails and I am getting multiple delivery failure notices every day to .

Is there anyting I can do to regain control?

I am running Norton Internet security 2006 and no problems are reported. How can this happen?

My domain has been hijacked by spam emails

Welcome to my world! In my case its partly the result of leaving a trail of email-addresses across the web in connection with my genealogy interests. It seems some dodgy bar stewards out there trawl web sites for email addresses, and then send dodgy or spam emails to other people, as if from you. Nobody has actually hijacked your domain as such.

Of course having an email address of the form 'anything@username.plus.com' is a problem too. Having sussed the format, its quite easy for the Dodgy Bs to make-up more email addresses that could be from you (ie 'nonsense@username.plus.com').

What to do? Well, if you use Outlook, you could set-up a Rule to automatically 'bin' all 'undeliverable-mail' type incoming emails. You could (should) also set-up another Rule to auto-bin emails with certain words in the text (eg viagra and the variants).

It won't be a cure, but it might make your inbox more bearable! Cheesy

Even better is to use mailwasher then you can bin the mail even before it gets to you machine. Smiley

My domain has been hijacked by spam emails

I had the same problem, I got Plusnet to set my default email (anything@username.plus.com) to a "black hole". Any mail going to the default address now just vanishes. I then set up additional mailboxes for "wanted" emails. It took a few days for PN to set it up, but my inbox went from 200 spam/undiliverable emails per day to about 6 or 7 (the usual viagra, fake rolex etc.)

This sounds similar to a problem I am having and would welcome your advice acccordingly.

I have updated Nortons 2005, run spyware programs and done full system scans.

Every time I boot my PC up, i get dozens of messages on the screen from Nortons to say that my emails are being rejected because they appear to be spam yet, I am not trying to send emails and I dont even have any email programes set up on the pc as I access emails thorugh the PN portals.

The topics to some of the emails that my PC is trying to send relate to weight loss, rolex viagra etc etc.

Can anyone help at all? I would hate for people to "somehow" be receving spam emails from me.

thanks

I too get over 1000 spams a day, many of them from forged addresses and to made-up addresses.
I use Mailwasher Pro to "field" them, and mostly it works well. Occasionally it can get it wrong, but I'm fast learning how to set up better filters to prevent mistakes.
I've also set Plusnet's spam service to low priority, so that at least anything that looks like spam comes back marked and a simple filter using [-SPAM-] as a keyword catches all of those and marks them for deletion.
I've also known Plusnet to get it wrong in the past, so I simply do a quick eyeball scan and find I can spot anything that I really wanted to keep very easily. It doesn't happen very often.
I'm not really sure about Mailwasher's Blacklist facility any more, as there are so many forged "From" addresses and others that are only ever used once, that blacklisting seems irrelevant.

Regards,

Alan.

I'm afraid this goes with the times, I get loads of 'undeliverable' e-mails and lately many emails with explicit subject descriptions.

Thanks friend, I'm a newbie here and was getting a wee bit worried that I was being singled out.
Now to try and sort something out to stop these

Unwanted spam emails

I have read through this thread with interest, because I am really fed up with 70 or 80 unwanted messages every day.
I have suggested to PLUSNET SUPPORT that I will have to consider either changing to another ISP, or maybe just change my email address at PLUSNET.
I have not yet received a reply, and wonder if any readers can suggest how I go about doing that. I can not find any mention regarding such an operation on the PLUSNET WEBSIGHT

80 junk emails a day! You're LUCKY... I get between 1500-2000 a day! And it's getting very tiresome going to webmail, trawlling through the spam and other junk, and delete it before I even launch my Mail program (I'm using a Mac with OS X 10.4). It gets to the point where I have to check my email about 4-8 times a day, so I'm not overwhelmed with it.

I'm beginning to think about setting up another domain mailbox of some sort, and start afresh, so I can 'blackhole' or bounce the whole lot of 'em. It seems like the only way to get round this pain in the butt problem. Welcome to the world of email! :?

Yes it's easy enough to do that. Just set up a free dialup account with another user name and you can then use that address for you mail.
As long as you collect mail from that account at least once every couple of months it will remain an active account.

Hope that helps.

Well i can beat that 4,974 the first day 3,864, At this point I shut down the email address. I use MAilwasher but you still have to trawl through all the garbage to get to the stuff addressed to me. Plusnet were little help. making all the suggestions about Virus checking etc, but failing to address the point of only receiving mail addressed to me and not all the variations, anyone@anyone.
I think I'll move to BT
