The Midi port is generally part of the gameport. If your laptop does not have a gameport, you may not be able to connect a midi keyboard.
I don't think the USB to gameport adapters work with midi.

This link includes the pinouts for PC gameports/midi

Sigh!!!! oh well the only other option is to keep the laptop for myself, and buy her a second hand Atari :-) but thanks for the reply, although I don't think my soldering skills are quite up to the wiring diagrams you refered to.But I think I am going to have similar problems with my "Mac" so she can't use that......... Phew!!!

err... sorry sunhouse, you can actually buy a usb-to-midi adapter... such as theM-Audio USB Midi Interfaces

There have two single usb-midi devices, namely the USB Midisport UNO or USB Midisport 1x1

You can buy these products from online stores such as:

http://www.procass.co.uk
http://www.sub.co.uk
http://www.inta-audio.co.uk/

and the cheapest I've seen was at procass at 38.30 pounds... and it works with PC, Laptop and MAC.... Wink

Btw, be aware that you will also need some music software to record the MIDI input with - though I presume you knew that anyway! Smiley
