Howeveri have a few question i hope you can help out with.

1) I have got gnome running, and i need to find out how to burn a DVD?

2)Can i access a winxp machine to share files over a network? how?

3)is there a network neighbourhood avaialable, at least for Ubuntu machines on same network?

For 3 use samba which should already be installed as it comes with most distros now.

I'm not sure I understand fully what you mean in 2. You can use samba to create network shares then access the shares on your winxp PC.

For DVD writing try some of these assuming you can get a version that installed on your distro or they may be installed already.

For MP3 players try here.

Or use google to find what you are after.

Samba is not a program it is a service.

Click on the samba link I gave and read the documentation. Your config files will probably be in /etc/samba. I don't know debian or your version (which is based on debian) so it may be different.
