How to get around - Folder Access is denied.

My laptop died. I bought a new one and a caddy for the drive out of the old one so I could get my stuff off the old H.D.

I can get at everything except the critical folder i.e. Documents and Settings\MyFolder which when I try to access it I get an Access is Denied error.

Obviously it's because the SID I'm logged onto my new laptop with is different to the SID on the old drive.

Anybody got a solution please?

 - well that was easier than I thought it would be. Safe mode and logon as Administrator then add user (me) with full control.

Every now and again the MS Knowledge Base comes in handy

It could have been easier, just logon as an Administrator, why boot to Safe Mode?

Because it's Windows XP Home Edition.

yeah, administrator is hidden from XP's default login screen even on XP pro, unless you use safe mode.

There is a key sequence you can press (can't remember what it is) to switch from the XP Welcome screen to the traditional username/password box, then you can type in administrator and their password.

Just to clarify what appears to be a misunderstanding here.

You cannot log on as "Administrator" on Windows XP Home Edition unless you are running in safe mode - to quote Microsoft "This is by design".

You can log onto an account with full control but this isn't the same as logging on as Administrator.

Obviously in XP Pro you can.

The three fingered salute opens task manager in Home Edition or if you are at the logon screen, it gives you the option to enter a user name and password manually. You still have to be in safe mode to logon as Administrator.

Sorry about that. Never even crossed my mind that it was an XP Pro feature.
