Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

Help... panic attack...
After Plusnet advised me to change my password and being a novice at the computer game I spent a while last night trying to log on without success with my new password.
Then a phone call to Support informed me that I had to change my password on the dial up box as well.
Now... I don't have the dial up box showing on my screen at Start Up only the Moden Icon which I click to be connected.
A legthy trial and error then ensued to find and restore this screen to retrieve the dial up box to be shown at Start Up which I eventually managed to find and change.
I dont know what I pressed but......
the crunch is I have lost/deleted the System Restore ability.
Can someone please, please help me restore the System Restore?
Clumsy Roy.

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

I am not sure how much damage you have done but lets start with simple check
click on
Start/Control Panel/System then System Restore - what does it show
Alternatively
Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance/System then System Restore
Which one you need depends on how you have control panel setup the first is for classic view and the second is category view
If it shows system restore as running can you be more specific as to the problem you are seeing

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

Thanks for the reply Jim,
yes its still running, although when I try to restore a date it only gives yesterdays date to restore which is after I made the cock-up.
It doesn't have a previous date even last month etc.
It appers I have lost any previous restore dates.

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

There is nothing you can do about that I'm afraid.
The way the restore works is that keeps the restore points until it runs out of disk space. When you go into system restore, click on settings and you will see the amount of disk space allocated - the maximum is 12% of the disk capacity linky
Perhaps you could give a bit more detail of the problems you are seeing.
Edit - did a bit more digging and the setting is not a reserved space but a limit beyond which it won't go. Hence it is all down to the amount of free space on the drive this link is very useful

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

Apologise for not replying sooner Jim.
The problem is that after I had the wee hiccup and trying everything to get connected with the new Plusnet password, I probably pushed/clicked/deleted or did something else stupid and mucked up the Restore proceedure.
I have tried to restore my computer several times.
Although it goes through the motions it comes up with the message that it cannot restore it to the requested dates.
How would it go if I just switched the damned thing off, count to ten and switch it back on again.
I take it I would loose all the previous restore dates but would it start from todays date.
That way I could wait for a couple of days and try again.
I suppose theres only one way to find out!!
On the settings bit the arrow is at maximum, 12% - 4579MB.
Thanks again,
Roy

Roy,
I assume that by the time you read this you will have switched the computer off and started again.
I doubt if it will make any difference but having done it - and I assume it didn't help.
Can you be more specific with the problem you now have and also advise if you have an XP install disk (not one of those silly recovery disks).

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

OK Jim,
here's what I've done.
Switched off (unchecked) the System Restore ability in the System Tools.
Left it off for a slow count to ten and switched it back on again.
Gonna wait until tonight to see if I can restore the it to this time.
I will get back to you then if thats OK and update you.
Yes, I've got the original Evesham Disc which came with my computer and included XP setup.
Again I appreciate your assistance here.
Roy.

Help...lost/deleted System Restore ability !!

Think I've cracked it Jim.
Although I've lost all previous restore dates except for yesterdays, I did a System Restore this morning and it restored it to the time I switched it off yesterday.
Then did a 'undo' and got it back for this mornings date and time.
Sooooooo.... fingers crossed, whatever I did to make a b**** up in the first place the old wifes tale of 'switch it off and count to ten' seems to have worked.
For nowHuh?
I really appreciate your taking time to reply and help.
Its nice to know that in moments of sheer panic there are people out there that will offer assistance.
Regards and take care,
Roy.

Roy,
That is the really good thing about these forums, and the PUG forums as well. There are always people willing to help.
I know I have also received a lot of help with technical problems.
Really pleased it has sorted itself out.
