Help With Wireless Network

Have we got your network configuration correct?

Laptop connects wirelessly to router using DHCP
Desktop connects wirelessly to router via USB wireless adapter, using DHCP.

The answer to your problem kinda depends what you mean by "the laptop can't see the desktop"

If it can't ping the desktop, then it's a routing problem. If it can't see the desktop in Windows Network Browsing (which is what I think you mean), then it's probably a domain/workgroup issue. What operating systems are the two machines running?
