Hayes JT FAX files

An aquaintance has scanned a couple of maps for me and sent the two resulting files as attachments.
"filename1.001" and "filename2.001"
He says "They are in (Hayes JT FAX) format and should be universally acceptable."

Can anyone tell me what type of files these are and what do I need to be able to read them?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hayes Fax

I think that you need software to open these files, like 'Supervoice' which I used to use in business.
Now you have the facility to use the Plusnet 'Fax - 2 - Email' service'.
You can set it up for yourself in your account under 'email settings'
You can then get your friend to send it to your own fax number, which Plusnet will give you. It is sent as a graphic.
