Fax storage using 56k modem

Does anybody know of a 56k fax modem that will store faxes while the PC is turned off and/or can be used as an answerphone?
I take faxes on my PC at the moment using a bog standard 56k PCI which only recieves when the PC is on and I am trying to find out if there a better option, but after trawling a lot of manufacturers sites, I am non the wiser as to what they can do.
I have seen a description of a Sitecom USB modem that says 'voice and fax PO boxes' but I can't see how that would work on USB.
Any help much appreciated
Thanks.

You are assigned an 0870 number when you activate the service.

Please note, not all accounts have fax2email services included free, for instance I don't think the ADSL Home Surf account includes this.

To activate the service simply go HERE, click Fax2Email and press Activate.

For more details of the Fax2Email service check HERE.

If you still want a FaxModem that can store faxes and voice messages (answering machine), then look at this one from US Robotics.

OR

Olitec also used to do the "Smartmemory" modem (I have one with a 8Mb memory card in it). Neat piece of kit, with remote control and speaker output. I now use it purely as an answering machine and Fax.
Their newer memory modem is the Selfmemory

I have tried the Olitech"where to buy" link and each time i search one of the "suppliers" I am told nothing can be found!

Most odd.

Try searching for olitec (without the h). It appears this may be a discontinued product so difficult to find but it is listed on a number of suppliers websites although all the ones I viewed had 0 in stock.

Are you sure the olitec(h) modem has a separate power supply so it works when the PC is off. There does not appear to be many modems around that have USB *and* an external power supply so the modem works when the PC is not on. Most are powered from the USB port or use a serial connection which is not what you want.

You can get serial to USB converters which may mean you can buy an external serial voice/fax modem and still connect it to your USB port. For examples see http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/10391831/ref=br_bx_1_c_2_1/026-0848800-8477206 but shop around.

Another option might be to use a powered USB hub but I don't know if power is supplied to the Hubs USB ports when the PC is turned off.

With a USB to serial converter or powered hub (if it works), you can use this which I have used in the past without any major problems: http://www.microwarehouse.co.uk/product.aspx?SKU=E444323 shop around for best price.

Sorry, a typing mistake, the "h" on the end of Olitec

Olitech stopped exporting to the UK a few years ago, when they had some sort of tie up with French Telecom.
Although the Olitec website lists a contact address in the UK, I have not tried it.

There are stand alone self powered versions with 4Mb memory for both USB and serial connection.

You can order off the Olitec French website, but you'll need to speak French. (I don't)

Where I did see it listed on a UK website it was about £120 + VAT + Delivery. It would be cheaper to get a USB<->serial converter and the modem we have both linked to.

He wants specifically a modem that will operate as a fax machine and voicemail when the PC is off.
USR and Olitec do them. Only Olitec do a USB version. Mine has removeable flash cards and will use up to 32mb cards, that stores a lot of faxes and voice. The USR is not upgradeable for memory.

Post the site where you saw it on the other thread. I am sure he will be greatful.

Many thanks to you all, and yes i am very grateful.

I did not know that you can get a serial to USB adaptor. With this i will have no problem ONCE I have found a source for either of the two modems recommended.

Keep up the good work.
