External USB2 and Firewire Hard Drive

I have one of the drives described above, make unknown.

It still powers up as I can hear the same noise as usual, it gets warm and the blue light at the front flashes when it is turned on.

However the laptop will not recognise it either on USB2 or Firewire.

I have just bought a new laptop, Athlon 64 mobile 3200+, XP Pro, 1 GB RAM and 60 GB hard drive.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance

External USB2 and Firewire Hard Drive

Did you install the software drivers so the device is recognised as a drive?

unplug the drive, reboot ur laptop, log in, plug drive in, run the "find new hardware" wizard located in controll Panel. It should find it.

I have done this on two separate XP Pro computers and it is not recognised.

I imagine that it is probably a hardware fault with the USB/Firewire drive..

have u made sure the ports on the laptop are working?

The ports are a ll working and I have tried both USB and Firewire. I have now assumed that it is duff and bought a new external drive case.

Are there any simple test I can do with the old case to see what has gone wrong?

Does the new case work?

I can't see what tests you can, it should work once all the drivers are installed. However USB and Firewire are plug and play, so XP should have automatically sensed the drive without having to install any software.

Have you checked system device manager within control panel, for conflicts when using the old drive?

It just does not show up anywhere in the computer - it does not exist!

What about the new case? any joy?

It does sound like a hardware fault. Do you have any other usb or firewire stuff that you can use to test the ports are working ok?

have u made sure that the hd is actualy connected ITS side of the lead?

I had the case apart and checked that both connectors were pushed home but with no luck.

The hard drive works OK in my new USB 2.0 case so I image that the old case has a faulty board.
