Errror message and computer restarting on XP PRO when online

I have a new computer running XPpro and am getting a message which I do not understand when connected to the Internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer or e-mail on Outlook Express. The message tells me that the computer will restart and the message:-

NT/Authority/System. Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call Service terminated unexpectedly.

The message then counts down in seconds and the computer restarts. I am new to XP, have used Win98 previously. I would appreciate any help offered. TIA Eileen

This is a possible symptom of a virus - if I were you, I'd make it my top priority to do a full system virus scan. Smiley

More specifically it sounds like the Blaster worm. For details and removal instructions, please see the Sophos AV page.

Thank you so much to those who replied to my query. You were correct, I had a worm and it was the W32 Blaster Virus. Sophos found it and I went to the Windows Update site and downloaded many patches. I ran Sophos again and the system is now clear of infection.

You can keep your sytem protected with antivirus
software, a free version is AVG
Also install a decent firewall such as Sygate free

Errror message and computer restarting on XP PRO when online

I am sorry to trouble you again but since installing AVG every half hour or so a message pops up on the screen from AVG saying:-

Identified Worm/Lovsan A in file C:\Sytem Volume Information\ restore {very long number}\RPI5\A0001852.exe

When I run AVG it says there is no virus and Sophos says the same thing.

The file seems to be hidden - I can not find it. Do the virus scans not scan the hidden files?

Can you help me to get rid of this please?

TIA Eileen

It would appear that system restore is
restoring the worm reinfecting the pc.
You need to disable system restore and
run the Microsoft patch.
There are some instructions on how to
disinfect here

Alec,
Thank you. I followed all the instructions including turning off System Restore and the message has not appeared in the last hour. Now I am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't appear again. Oh why didn't I have Windows 98 on this new computer?

I exactly had the same problem as you describe, it only showed up when I updated to XP, the virus was probably there beforehand, but only became activted when I loaded XP Pro. I cured it using a free program called stinger - can't quite remember the URL, I just do a search for Stinger on Google.

I didn't have to turn off system restore, I now run Stinger on a regular basis

It would appear that in Eileen's case the worm
had infected the backup files created by
System Restore, hence the initial steps to clean
the pc had failed.
Now that the patches have been re - applied
it should be OK to start up system restore
again, the firewall and anti virus should protect from
further infection.
Stinger appears to be a specialised
application to clean specific threats including Blaster,
it would be worth giving it a go should anything re-appear.
