Don't understand - Wi Fi and Ethernet networking

We've got a DSL connection to a Voyager 2500V modem router; ethernet to desktop Windows XP Home and Wi Fi to a laptop running XP Pro.
Both PC's work well in terms of internet use. Would like to share files and printer. Would some kind person please advise if I need a wireless adaptor fitted to the desktop PC in order to get this to work (it has a VIA Rhine Fast II Ethernet only). If I connect a wireless adaptor would it then be possible to get something printed from the wireless laptop via the main desktop (without adding another device to the printer itself Epson Stylus Photo R200). Just can't figure it all out at present!

No , there is no need to fit a wireless adaptor to the desktop. You should be able to share files as it is now. Check that both the laptop and desktop are in the same workgroup and that you have set up some file shares.
Again sharing printers shouldnt be a problem with your configuration although a bit more setting up is usually required.
Try this link for advice:-
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/honeycutt_july2.mspx

and this looks like a useful link for resolving general file/print sharing http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windowsnetworking/tp/winfilesharing.htm

Hope that helps

Actually this http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1596 might be a better start for printer sharing if you are a beginner. It also brings up the subject of firewalls, which may require configuration for file/printer sharing to work

In xp pro you have to turn on the file sharing by opening explorer (not IE) choose tools/ folder option/view and the last one in the list untick use simple file sharing.

The other problem that get people is username/password. When you try and connect to the other pc windows asks the pc whos connecting and if you dont have an account it says go away.

So to make it simple setup the username and password on both pc so they are the same and log in with that username.

Actually that isn't quite right. That turns on NORMAL file sharing where you have to set permissions etc yourself.

File sharing by default however IS enabled using simply file sharing mode.

You just right click the directory you want to share, and use the appropriate menu option.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
