Connecting 2 PCs (confused)

This may sound like a very silly question, but I am hopelessly confused over this issue:

Currently, I am connecting to Broadband using a USB modem, only for my desktop PC.

I now want to be able to connect my desktop PC *and* a laptop PC.
The desktop PC is next to the master socket, i.e. can be wired. Has a free USB port but no Ethernet card.
The laptop PC is in a different room - should be a wireless connection.

Exactly what equipment do I need?

Grateful for any advice ...

The first thing that you will need is a Router. You might like to consider the Netgear DG834G which is a very popular Router which will connect up to four computers via ethernet and many more with a wireless connection. It does not connect via USB.

To connect your desktop PC via an ethernet cable to the DG834G you will either need to add a PCI Network Card inside your PC or you could buy a USB/Ethernet adapter. Both options will add an ethernet port to your desktop.

Does your laptop already have a wireless card/adapter? If not you will also need to buy one of these.

Belkin do a great USB Ethernet adaptor - the F5D5050.
I always have one handy, with the drivers on a flash drive, great when PCI ones go dicky!
