Having had the all clear to say that my friends account has been activated and having received the username and password required to enter into my router I tried but could not get a connection.
Three hours of fiddling I tried removing the dsl part of the username and it connected immediately is this normal?

Plusnet use several realms (the bit after the @) for broadband connections:

@plus.net & @plusdsl.net are the two most common ones used.

This will have been stated under Connection settings -> Connection details. If that does not match what you are using then you need to raise a question/ticket and get it investigated.
