unbelievable,

during busy times I might expect to see a speed reduction in silver, bronze traffic but http is gold.

surely there is an underlying issue with this platform.

Most definitely. I want off, I've been through all their problems over the last year or so, I thought I would grin and bear it, but as it's now affecting my normal browsing I really need to move.

What speed do you get doing a pure HTTP download from www.btopenworld.com/speedtest - do the 15MB file. Make sure you clear your cache and deleted the downloaded file if you want to repeat the test.

I downloaded the bt speed test file and it took ages. Started off at 13k/s then went up to 111k/s for a brief moment then sat at around 40k/s

Sad

Its taken 45 mins but I have just managed to do a BT speed test.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2827 kbps

So for this time of night it says all is fine

BUT

That 15MB file Peter suggested using is downloading at (about) 900kbps, which is what I am getting with other speed testers.

Something is not right here

Find out what gateway you are on - http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway then unplug your line and reconnect until you get on a different gateway, then try the test again. You may need to repeat it to try other gateways to see if one is better than the others.

Some BT centrals can get more congested than others causng slower throughput speeds. It could also be local exchange contention.

Looking at the usage graphs there appears to be problem.

I'm on Pte-ag1 which seems to be the least affected.

It's not exchange contention as my BT speed test is excellent (see above)

Absolutely dire speeds again tonight, as it has been for the last three nights.. sometime grinding to a halt altogether.

Who has done WHAT, and no, its not a problem with my computer.

Tested a download and web browsing and it is all working at full speed for my 2Mb connection. I would log a fault ticket with Plusnet.

We're looking at this being a potential problem with one of the Ellacoya switches not authenticating against our customers last night, causing the other switches to be overloaded, thus increasing packet loss.
