Personally I swear by PhpBB, but that's just me and I'm not very objective because I've never used Ikonboard.

RE: phpbb forum versus ikonboard

I've used both. phpBB is far superior. It is easier to set-up and configure and looks much nicer in my opinion Smiley

One thing to note. PHP-Nuke (http://phpnuke.org/) has phpBB built-in if you are looking for a pre-made highly customisable web portal solution.

This may be a silly question but why are there so many CMS called 'nuke'?

Nuke is too heavy in my opinion,
there is nothing in php-nuke that you can't do with phpBB in fact the forum included with the nuke package is phpBB
http://phpnuke.org/modules.php?name=Forums

My entire site is just a heavily modded phpBB

But for those not so talented at modifying scripts. PHP Nuke is a must for a web portal.

Regarding why so many CMS's choose to be called something-Nuke. I really I have no idea...

I've nicked this from a now defunct page (Cheers to Google Cache...!)

PHP-Nuke, the first PHP scripted Nuke, is the brainchild of Francisco Burzi, whose name you will see plastered over every Nuke page. As they like to say in sprorts, "He's the Man!"

PHP-Nuke resulted from the years of his administering a news site called Linux Preview (later sold to LinuxAlianza.com), where in August of 1998, he wrote a program in Perl called NUKE and used it for about a year. Linux Preview became so popular that the resource demand on his original engine began to sputter.

---

So there ya go - They are all called Nuke because they are all based on the original concept by Francisco Burzi.

How does Invision Power Board compare to phpBB? I've seen a fair bit of it around the Internet and I already use their Invision Power File Manager (formally Aquonics File Manager) script which is very cool.

I think like most comparisons, you are going to get people saying A is better than B, or the other way round.

The only thing you can really do is to try them yourself.

My opinion though, Invision Power Board is awesome Cheesy

Having just looked at IPB to be honest I dont see much difference from IPB to IB Smiley
I am running a IB and found it more userfriendly than a phpbb forum. ;-)

The difference between IB and IPB is IPB is coded in PHP, IB is coded in perl. The server load/queries used on IPB is a lot lower compared to IB.

You can see a demo running and take a look at the admin cp at http://www.ibforums.com/demo/
