is upload speed directly correlated to download speed

As title says.

do the two get higher in unison or can the upload speed by high and the downlaod speed be low.

Your upload and download speeds are independant of each other and the line attenuation and SNR determin what speeds you will get in each direction as does the type of ADSL connection you have (IPstream Home/Office or IPstream Max or LLU).

For the non-max products the max download speed is 2Mbs and the max upload speed is 256Kbs and line attenuation / SNR levels determin what speed you get.

For Max and LLU products the current max download speeds is 8Mbs and max upload speed is as below.

The upload speed is also limited by the product you are on with IPstream max (most residential products like PAYG, BB+ BB premier) having a limit of 448Kbs, IPstream max pro (most of the busines accounts) 832Kbs and LLU 800Kbs (all accounts).

Also... If you're uploading at full whack (say ~300kbps) you can slow your downstream pretty much to a halt - 2meg or 8meg.
