Wrong time on portal servers - Why?

We've now had confirmation from Dave Tomlinson that two of the portal servers had the wrong time which was causing a number of different problems. What I don't understand is why they are not all using a time server to keep them synchronised.

This issue keeps cropping up from time to time (sic) but for some reason it never gets resolved, why I have no idea as it's not difficult to time sync servers.

They are connected to an NTP server, however the NTP server is in Technology Building so went down with everything else on Thursday afternoon. It's now back up and the servers should all be synced back up.

So where is your NTP backup server? Surely they could use one of the many worldwide time servers as a backup?

I believe that all the DNS servers run NTP, but as far as I'm aware NTP doesn't help if the timezone is incorrect.

Yep, NTP does nothing for a misconfigured timezone.

I've just realised the flaw in your response Dave (God knows why I've been so slow). When I looked in the headers of the emails sent out by portal09 it had the time the message was sent in UT (Universal Time) - this was two hours behind the current time. So it was nothing to do with incorrect timezone settings on that server (it may have been the problem on other servers).

Using a NTP server would have avoided the problem with that server.

It appears it's not just the portal servers that have the wrong time: Webmail Time is 14-15 minutes fast

Please can someone check that all the Plusnet servers are using an NTP server to keep correct time. It's just making you look like a bunch of incompetant idiots!
