Will new CGI platform have SSL?

I don't see the point in having SSL on the HTML server when you cant use php/cgi there.

Could this be a new feature please Smiley Smiley

Good Afternoon,

The new cgi platform has already been rolled out as per the CGI Service Status announcement on the 08/04/03. I currently can't confirm if the new platform has SSL(I don't think it has), but will repost with the relevant details once I have them.

Regards
Martin

RE: Will new CGI platform have SSL?

First off, I must point out, +Net isn't a full hosting service (though much of the material may look that way).

SSL is a premium service for ISP's, due to many factors, here are just a few of them.

1: Cost. It costs a lot to provision and maitain a SSL certificate.

2: Server load. Server load will jump for SSL requests. There is considerable CPU requiments for encoding and decoding traffic. Coupled with the fact you want PHP and CGI abilities, load will take off.

3: Official support: Most of the services they provide, are of a unofficial basis. Meaning it is there, and they will provide basic details and information, most being in the support pages. With SSL, help requests would likely rocket,a dn official support would need to be seeked.

All the documents speecified what was and wasn't available.

There are many providers that can and will provide you with a better sevice than +Net (no disrespect to +Net, it's a simple fact that hosting providers are dedicated to this job, rather than a broad range of sevrices).

RE: Will new CGI platform have SSL?

Hi.

Depending on cost, I would pay more for features such as SSL. It's a pity Plusnet dont incorporate it into the CGI platform, but as you point out there are good reasons. Are the services provided on an "Unofficial basis"? I cant see anything I am using that wasnt advertised as part of my dialup package. Obviously requests for updates are unofficial but these should be part of routine upgrading and in the best interests of plusnet.

I'm sure there are plenty of hosting services that offer much more but plusnet provide the best value for money as far as unmetered dialup/hosting intergrated goes.

Thanks

RE: Will new CGI platform have SSL?

Good Afternoon,

I can confirm that the new CGI platform does not support SSL due to various reasons, some of which you have touched upon in your comments.

RE: Will new CGI platform have SSL?

Hi all,

I can confirm that SSL is not available on the cgi server, only on the normal homepages server. We have no plans to do this at the moement - the reasons why have pretty much been explained already Smiley
