Why do speeds fluctuate so much

What's the state of your exchange - if the vp's are red or amber you could well experience fluctuating speeds.

Also any transient line noise could affect speed... not to mention the speedchecker itself isn't the most reliable method of checking speed (not just PN's but the majority of speedcheckers are prone to giving fluctuating results depending on server load etc, plusnet's does occasionally decide to send too small a file which gives junk results).

Exchange is fine and green

The PlusNet speed tester gave files of around 3MB (2.94MB)

Nothing changed on my line since last year when a new cable from pole to hose was fitted, and until now the speeds never varied by so much...

Nod, I'm suspecting the speed tester itself at the moment - just ran it and it gave around 900... which given I'd just finished downloading some software from MS at 2000 is somewhat on the low side...
