Why So Slow - New Detection of Encrypted Applications

Ellacoya Networks Bolsters Deep Packet Inspection Capabilities

PlusNet, a leading ISP in the United Kingdom, has deployed the Ellacoya system network wide for visibility into application and subscriber usage and tools to manage that traffic dynamically. Its Workplace customer portal, based on Ellacoya’s technology and integrated with PlusNet’s OSS, enables the subscriber to self-select and manage their own services. “In order for PlusNet to continuously maintain high service quality and customer satisfaction, it is imperative for us to have visibility into all traffic on the network, not just a percentage of traffic,” said Phil Webb, senior network architect at PlusNet. “With the sudden increase in encrypted peer-to-peer applications we are very pleased to be able to now identify encrypted flows and properly classify and prioritize them so that our subscribers receive a high-quality service offering even during peak congestion times.”

You're not the only one, still I wonder if someone could clarify whether the Ellacoya update can differentiate between different types of encrypted traffic, and if so why this is having such an adverse effect on non-P2P traffic.

Surely the update was only supposed to affect this?

Why So Slow - New Detection of Encrypted Applications

Because plusnet has not invested enough in capacity? Whilst traffic management has its benefits, there is no substitution for capacity Cry

I suspect the Ellacoya profile is same through the product range at all times of the day - just the caps are different.

Supposedly it is not (Premier is supposed to be less restrictive than Plus for P2P) but in practise there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference.
