Which DNS servers?

What are the correct DNS servers to use?

In connection details, it states:
Primary DNS Server 212.159.13.49
Secondary DNS Server 212.159.13.50

But in this post:
http://portal.plus.net/central/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33840&highlight=slow+dns

Dave Tomlinson gives:
212.159.6.9 & 212.159.6.10

Please can someone at plusnet give the best settings, and then ensure that the connection details pages are appropriately updated.

Thanks

Which DNS servers?

Hi there,

Both sets are correct and any combination of either set will work.

Hope that helps.

I use

212.159.13.49
212.159.13.50

I also use a mates DNS server that are run from his house. This is mainly for when PN's servers need to catch up, but I am putting wheels in motion to actually setup my own DNS server for me to connect to.

Which DNS servers?

Thanks to all for replies.

Is there any significant speed difference between different servers?

You should'nt see any difference in speed between them.

Which DNS servers?

Hi Collinet,

I can say there is any speed difference between them. The reason I use a different set (as in my mates) is purely because they tend to flush quicker than the Plusnet ones.
A typical example of this was when I changed the settings for a domain name it took the plusnet dns 72 hours to update as apposed the 3 hours it took my mates DNS to flush.

This is the only difference I have ever encountered.

So what's wrong with letting the router auto-detect them then? I thought I'd even seen Peter recommending that.
It seems to work OK for me. Any good reason why I should change it?

Generally its the best bet, but when Plus Net had DNS issues a while back the hard coding of the servers was recommended at that time.

Normally there should be no problem if the router is set to auto detect.

Which DNS servers?

I have my router to auto detect the DNS.
As far as my main system goes though I hard set it to use the best DNS server at the time. Be this Plusnets, or my Mates (soon to also be my own).

I think it all boils down to what your doing and what your preferences are. I know that when I am changing domain name settings ( Such as the names server settings ) i need the DNS to resolve as fast as possible.
Unfortunately Plusnets DNS do not allow for this hence using alternatives.

As for general internet browsing and viewing, I personally think your fine with auto detect.
