What could be the cause of such a high noise margin

We are actively looking forward to our exchange being bulk upgraded to 2 meg. So I took a look at the stats that my conexant accessrunner UBS ADSL adapter gives me.

Noise Margin Up /Down +128dB / +40dB
Attenuation Up/Down +20dB / +29dB

So all looks OK except for that Up Noise figure.

We are about 1 kilometer from our exchange. Filters on the telephone, Adsl line connects directly into BT's primary by 3 meters of wire.

So why is the Up Noise Margin so high at 128dB?

...and what impact will that have on the ultimate speeds we can acheive?

High is better.
Having said that your look much to high so I would think your router is misreporting the figures.

A high noise margin would indicate higher useful signal to noise ratio, which means better signal and better line.

But yeah, 128dB is quite a large one... I would suggest your router is misreporting that figure. Try restarting it.
