Weird DNS/wireless Problem - Any Suggestions

Hi,

Enviroment: Any one of a 3Com, Occam or D-Link ADSL modem and wireless router (tried them all).
PC clients running Win XP (Home and Pro editions)
Wireless (internal Centrino or PCMCIA cards or USB)

Symptoms: Client connected by wired LAN gets usable DNS address via DHCP i.e. can resolve URLs etc OK
Client connected by wireless doesn't get usable DNS address via DHCP. If client makes a VPN connection to its owners work VPN server and gets a usable DNS everything is OK.

Would prefer not to have to hard code DNS but understand the cause of the problem.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

Nic

Weird DNS/wireless Problem - Any Suggestions

Hi,

When PC's connected via wireless what DNS servers does it get assigned?

If you do start->run type cmd and then enter ipconfig /all in the command prompt it should tell you what DNS servers have been assigned.

Cheers Dave,

This is the ipconfig with the wireless connection:

I stuck the 128.40.203.9 one in as I know it's one at work (although there might be firewall issues etc......)

I'm trying to remember what having entries in the DNS Suffix Search List means.

DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : adm.ucl.ac.uk

ucl.ac.uk
ac.uk

I'd say it's unlikely to be the cause, but I just can't remember off the top of my head what that does.

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

128.40.203.9

I presume the router is set up to handle DNS and this hasn't been disabled. Can you set the DHCP settings in the router to pass on our DNS servers rather than using itself as the DNS server?
