Website file not found page

I've seen sites where the page that indicates that a file does not exist/no longer exists has been customised. I've seen this refered to as the 404 page. Is it possible to do this customisation on a plusnet hosted site?

RE: Website file not found page

Good Afternoon,

Yes it is, this is customisable via a .htaccess file in your htdocs folder. This is a plain text file that allows you to override certain server settings.

What you would include in the file is a line similar to:

ErrorDocument 404 /error404.html

Which would call a webpage called error404.html in your htdocs folder when the server encountered a 404 error.

You can customise other errors in addition to error 404, you can find more specific information here:

http://dev.apache.org/presentation/fww96/core.html#errordocument

Or the apache homepage here:

http://www.apache.org

Kind Regards

RE: Website file not found page

Hi

Thanks for the help. The htaccess file seems to work.

One possible problem is search engines. If a search engine followed a broken link to my site then my 'not found' page would look like a genuine page. I wonder if I should do something to prevent 'phantom pages' being indexed.

The best I can think of is to give the error page the 'noindex' meta tag.

Good Afternoon,

That is probably the best idea.

Let me know if you need any further information.
