Webmail: incorrect character encoding

The Webmail (simple interface) sets the page character encoding incorrectly; in the page source meta tags it is set to Unicode:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=utf-8">

As far as I know, it should actually be using Western iso-8859-1 encoding, as in :
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

The effect of this is that in Firefox (and any other browser that sets encoding according to meta tags, I expect) certain symbols (e.g. £ signs) are displayed incorrectly as ? signs.

The problem is fixed, temporarily, by over-riding the encoding settings manually in Firefox and changing it to Western iso-8859-1. However next time the webmail page is loaded, it is again incorrectly set.

Webmail: incorrect character encoding

Hi,

Thanks for this, I've raised it as internal problem 21299.

I too have had this encoding problem, I see apostrophe replaced by a-circumflex, euro, (tm) (' --> ’) - most undesirable .
