Unable to connect to www.next.co.uk

Hi,

I'm trying to connect to www.next.co.uk, but IE just says "Waiting for http://www.next.co.uk..."; and the page never loads. I am using a laptop with wireless connection, and Internet Explorer 7. I have this same problem with a couple of other sites, but in general I can browse with no problem.

I have another laptop, and can connect to www.next.co.uk with no problem - this is via the same wireless connection at the same time. This laptop has Internet Explorer 6 installed.

It's probably a coincidence, but this problem started around the same time that I switched from PAYG to BBYW option 2.

Can anyone suggest anything to try? I haven't made any changes (that I'm aware of!) to anything on the laptop or the router firewall etc.

Thanks,
Pete

Just to add - my test may not be valid as I am on the RIN network

Unable to connect to www.next.co.uk

Hi,

The site loads fine for me on my home connection (not on RIN). The DNS records return fine on all our DNS servers too.

If it works on one PC but not the other I'd suggest first rebooting the PC and try it again and if not I'd suggest trying a different browser such as Opera - www.opera.com and see if that works.

I tried installing the Opera browser but the site still won't load. I've also tried disabling the Windows XP firewall but no luck.

If the problem doesn't lie with the browser and another laptop can access the site using the same wireless network then what else could restrict access to a particular site?

Can you connect via http://217.32.164.221/

If you can, you have a DNS issue.

Thanks for the help.

ps. is there a way to direct the output of commands into a text file rather than having to upload a screenshot like I did?

Unable to connect to www.next.co.uk

c:> command > file.txt

or use WinMTR and you can copy/paste from it. Just google for it.

You don't need to go via a text file - you can copy/paste directly.

Right click inside the box and select Mark.

Drag over the area of text you want to copy with the mouse.

Now hit Enter (or select Copy from the comtrol icon in the top left hand corner).

You can now paste the text in to your post.

Can anyone shed any light on what the problem might be from the output of the TRACERT command? I've just tried the 'Reset Internet Explorer settings' option but that hasn't had any effect. I have this problem with several websites, not just the one I originally mentioned.

Thanks,
Pete

Unable to connect to www.next.co.uk

Something's filtering out ICMP packets somewhere along the way, the web site loads fine but pings just time out.

That's probably normal. The site loads OK for me but the trace times out part way:

Thanks for the replies.

I reset my router to the factory settings and I can now access the site! What I don't understand is why one laptop could connect to the site with no problem and the other one couldn't. Both would have been allocated the same IP address on the wireless network.

Never mind, it works now, but I'll never know which setting in the router caused the problem.

Pete.
