Unable to access certain websites.

Hi

Given Plusnet have been wholly unable/unwilling to answer my help tickets (even after waiting 3+ days), I thought I might as well ask fellow customers...

Is anyone else unable to access:

http://www.oup.com
http://www.microsoft.com
http://www.hbosplc.com
http://www.pipex.co.uk
http://www.dti.gov.uk

I have tried rebooting (both routers and PCs), flushing DNS caches, clearing caches, turning on/off firewalls, all to no avail.

I am able to verify that the sites are not down by accessing them from another connection with a different ISP - so it must be something between my router and the site... i.e. the bit Plusnet are largely responsible for.

I have also tried adjusting MTU packet sizes but to no avail.

All in all, about 1/3 of the sites I try to access are unavailable.

Plusnet are as helpful as ever... Yep... basically not at all.

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions/similar tales?

Cheers.

p.s. anyone able to recommend a better isp? ;-)

Can you do a tracert to one/all of the sites?

Unable to access certain websites.

All 5 work for my office connection. Although I was a little put off that the 4th one did Tongue

Anyone else having any issues with any of those sites (apart from the graphics on the 4th).

I can try pings/tracerts and the addresses resolve to the following IPs:

http://www.oup.com
www.oup.com [12.107.205.41]

http://www.microsoft.com
lb1.www.ms.akadns.net [207.46.198.30]

http://www.hbosplc.com
www.hbosplc.com [62.172.43.220]

http://www.pipex.co.uk
www.pipex.co.uk [195.224.207.198]

http://www.dti.gov.uk
www.dti.gov.uk [164.36.38.151]

HOWEVER the tracerts do not complete - they only get so far. Usually they make it just outside the Plusnet network and then they "Request timed out".

In terms of pings I am told:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 207.46.19.60:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

Thanks for your help - you are already doing a far better job than Plusnet (not hard I know!) but thanks!!

Oh and the tracerts often end up saying:

"Destination net unreachable"

whatever that means...

For example (microsoft.com tracert done just now):

Unable to access certain websites.

Your tracert leaves PlusNet's network, enters Level3, ends up in Seattle then reaches Microsoft's Network (given the msn.net rDNS)...

Unable to access certain websites.

Yup!

Until those routers clear at least. try using the pathping command, see what routers are dropping packets!

But why am I not getting through while other PN customers are?

As for pathping:

Tracing route to portal.plus.net [212.159.8.137]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
0 desktop [10.0.0.4]
1 * * *
Computing statistics for 25 seconds...

Hop RTT Lost/Sent = Pct Lost/Sent = Pct Address
0 desktop [10.0.0.4]
100/ 100 =100% |
1 --- 100/ 100 =100% 0/ 100 = 0% desktop [0.0.0.0]

Trace complete.
