Traffic Management - My Connection

I read the recent post about trying to resolve issues with traffic management and it is good that you are trying to deal with the issue, although my own connection has been getting progressively worse since at least a couple of months ago and even since your attempt to resolve traffic prioritising issues.

Internet/web page browsing is slower than it used to be but I can live with that, not a big issue if a page loads a second or two slower than it used to. Notably slower at peak times.

The prioritisation of certain packet transfers seems very strange, I play a couple of online games, those being counter strike: source and a game called TA:Spring which comes with a lobby client which I connect through to play games in with other people.

In counter strike the ping, even at peak times, will appear to be good, i.e. 60-100 ping on a UK server, although if i bring up "net_graph_3" in console theres a noticable difference in the quality of the connection at peak times - effectively the "choke" on the connection skyrockets to crazy levels, like 60-80% choke. Obviously this can be annoying when playing a first person-shooter where choke effectively will stop the shots from registering, and information update to be recieved/sent by my connection.

More importantly, the difference between Counter Strike and TA:Spring are huge - its like the priorities are completely different - when I connect to TA:Spring lobby client over 2 months ago everything would be fine, the ping to the server would be around 100ms consistently (no problem) but since then the connection has been getting progressively worse, to the extent now where when I connect to the server at almost any time (10am-2/3am) I.e. even in non-peak hours, the ping will be huge, REALLY huge. When I "/ping" the server it will come back with a range of "1200-12000" ms reply time. Obviously even a second of lag in games is unplayable, nevermind 12 seconds (as of tonight 12 second ping).

Strangely, as I write this, I just pinged the sever again, and now the server replies repeadedly in a ping time of 250-450ms. It seems at random times my connection suddenly improves hugely and goes from a 12000ms reply time to a quite acceptable 100-200

Basically, I just want a consistent service where my ping does not have a range of 100-12000 and my download rate will not go from 0-300 kb/s randomly.

Router internet settings

When I check the internet settings through the "BT Voyager configuration manager" the "ADSL Speed (DS/US)" will change from hour to hour and day to day which confuses me - shouldnt it be fixed?

Currently as of this moment it says "ADSL Speed (DS/US) 4064/448 Kbps" but earlier it showed as "34**/448 Kbps" where * represents two other numbers I cant recall.

Also, often when I check the "RS Correctable Errors" the number shows in several hundred thousand at least. Surely several hundred thousand correctable errors can't be good? And 10's of thousands of uncorrectable errors if I leave the router running for a week or so.

Restarted router tonight and currently 0 errors, correctable or uncorrectable....just outlines the huge inconsistencyin service - sometimes the connection will run perfectly fine, at other times it will be full of errors, extremely slow, and prioritise internet activities seemingly randomly.

Example of massive fluctuations in short period of time:

As you can see from this, these were taken in the time during which i was writing this post, and the fluctuations are massive. Each time the timeout occurs, I reconnect and the ping times are different from the previous time.

Note that this is NOT caused by the server I connect to here lagging - ALL other users I have queried on this server have no issues with fluctuations in ping, or time out, it strictly happens to me.

At a guess it seems like every time I timeout my priority changes on my internet connection, or I get moved to a less/more busy server, or something similar, causing the pings to vary hugely. This is a particular example but each time I timout the changes are also apparent in internet speed for browsing websites/pages and in games.

Hope you can resolve some of these issues for me, or at least explain in my case why the connection fluctuates so massively from day to day and hour to hour. Thx, look forward to hearing response.

Sounds like PlusNet don't know about TA:Spring and don't have a traffic shaping profile for it, so it gets lumped in with everything else. With the last week's chaos added on top of that, you'll have some very laggy gameplay (if any gameplay at all).

Raise a ticket, explain what the game is (provide links etc), and hopefully they can sort something out for it.

Thanks Mark - good advice.

We're shortly going to publish a page with all the games that wee have got prioritised so that customers can do a quick check there - possibly with a 'submit a game' button.

Traffic Management - My Connection

Well I play a very old game called 'Air Attack' which was designed back in dial-up days to be used on DIAL-UP.

I have been having problems with that lagging recently - IT has a throughput of around 3-4Kb. PN is struggling to let me play that yet.

The future is looking grim for PN.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
