The Plus Newsletter - my review.

I have just finished reading the Plusnet Newsletter, and I have to say, I am a little disappointed.

When I saw the title I thought, wow - PN are starting to talk to the customers about developments in the industry, changes at PN - what we can expect to change etc. etc. Now that is pioneering.

However my initial admiration and sense of approval that greeted this wonder that lay before me in my inbox very quickly deteriorated.

We have an opening gambit of "win a 42inch telly and an xbox 360, and a years BB" - so not news, but a competition. Oh but not just a competition for all customers to have a go at during the Christmas period, but only those that sign up someone to PN.
So if you fancy entering this competition, then you have to go and find someone to sign up to a Broadband package - just at one of the most expensive times of year anyway. Well, thats me out.

Oh well, onto the news - here it is in the next section. Two paragraphs and a total of less than 100 words. Hmmm - faster speeds when available to all those currently on the 4mb and 8mb products. The member centre has changed.

Maybe there is more further down.....

Oh hang on... There’s that competition again.... Maybe we'll get to the news next......

Nope, that’s just using Christmas to try and plug Plus Talk.... Yes phone calls may be expensive, but it's Christmas. If you put the cost of the call before how important it is to speak to your family at Christmas, then you really are in need of help.

Maybe next.....

Nope - another competition - just got to use Plustalk to win this time.... Ho Hum maybe they are saving the news and real info for the knockout blow at the bottom.....

A breif insight into how people can still try to ensure they get just the right present for freinds and family members with the minimum effort. Yes they may sell just the right item in town that would make little Johnny’s eyes light up on that special day, but that would involve going outside...

Oh - and by the way if you want to shop online, why not visit the PN shop.....

That’s it. The end. Thanks for coming.

So - all in all, my first impressions of the newsletter are not great.

I have to say, for a "news" letter, the news was very sparse, and the adverts quite frequent. Very much a collection of spam adverts with a cute name.

Now had the article about shopping online gone on to mention or review other services, which may have helped those people who are unable to trudge round shops for reasons other than laziness or self preservation, (such as the disabled or elderly), that would have been interesting.

Feel free to plug the PN shop in the article, as one way of helping lighten the load at Christmas - but the PN shop doesn't help me find those fizzy bath bombs. (which I may add can get a little frisky if you don't keep an eye on them).

Where is the news on the Metronet purchase?
Where is the news on the speed increases for Usenet?
Where is the news on customer numbers?
Where is the news on new developments to the network?
Where is the news on future technologies?
Any articles from the community?

Any articles written by employees giving an insight to the company - perhaps one each letter from the various departments? A day in the life of a development team, then the CS team, then the board...

In my opinion, it is a great idea, but unless the newsletter actually starts to contain news rather than bulk PN advertising, I'll pass thanks.

Yep, agree with your review completely. The letter just seemed to be an exercise in advertising to me; no benefit to the existing customers at all.

Just a thought but maybe Carol should manage the CSC and the community should edit the newsletter. Pulling together content from PN and the community (like Chris suggested above) a mix of news and gossip in a non bias fahion representing both sides of the stories covered - bring the entire plusnet customer base closer together into one big family.

If we can't have it in the official one I'm defo going to suggest it for plusnetters...

I can recall PN saying (nay asserting) back in March that 90% of the 2Mbps customers would be getting those speeds by the end of the year...

In all fairness BT have changed the schedule a lot and I know PN are working on LLU partners. But that's no excuse for beliving BT; they should know BT's tendancy to get it wrong

Im sure we all expect PN adverts within the newsletter, but not for it to be wholly constructed with them.

Subtle adverts within articles aimed at news or developments within PN is what I personally beleive it should consist of. Interspersed between possible interesting stories or insights into how PN works. Now that woul give the competition something to aspire to.

Thanks for the feedback. The first edition didn't have the right balance and we'll address that for the next issue. We couldn't include the Metronet news given the timing. Thanks

Hows about letters to the editor? One lucky winner each month winning some kind of prize? Nothing as flash as a telly or XBOX, but maybe a £5 voucher for the PN shop?

Perhaps a "spotlight on" section giving a geeky review of some kind of technology - followed by a link to said technology in the PN shop?

That way you can draw people in, grab their attention and interest, without seeming overtly interested in their cash.

Although the first issue seems to be a bit out of touch with a newsletter, the principal really is great, and is certainly something that contributes to setting PN apart from the competition. Well done on the initiative.

Nice to see the e-mailed newsletter - when I was at plusnet I wrote the newsletter but at the time we could only post it to these forums rather than email them out, and as such it only reached a fraction of the users.

There were sales pitches as you might imagine but also useful articles on how to get the best out of people's accounts [the 'Focus On' section]. If you do a search on the forum for 'Focus On' and look for articles in 2001 you'll find a couple of them there, with such articles as email and CGI Cool

maybe the first one could be on the Ellacoyas they are using - I'm sure we'd all buy one to smash the living daylights of it (a great stress tool Cheesy). PN would make a fortune!

Cheesy  lol

Perhaps they could modify the F9 kids site to have whack-an-ellacoya instead of the space mole game Tongue
