Terrible Speeds - Help a n00b please

Guys

Excuse this post if its yet another re-hash etc. I am just curious to know if Im been "shaped" or whether I have a BT issue

Early morning before going to work I get 230kbs using FTP (2mb line), yet if I run this same FTP when I get home at night I only get 20kbs-40kbs. Yet at the same time the Plusnet speed checker says I can d/load at 1.59mb

Ive checked the server etc and it is not "clogged" plenty of free bandwith. And all other ftp site i go to exibit the same behaviour

Also, I have a teleworker account, and thought I was not to be shaped ?

Any advise appreciated

goto this address

http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway

and check what gateway you are on

if you are on :
PTE-AG1
PTE-AG2

your connection is probably going to be link:censored up

disconect and reconnect until you end up on

PTN-AG1
PTN-AG2

and you should be good

Having looked around I cant seem to navigate to the above link. Does anyone know how to get there, so I can check in the future.

Thanks in advance.

Weird, it works for me.

What you can do instead is do a tracert to google.co.uk or something.

Do this by pressing the start button, choose run.
Type cmd press enter
now type :
tracert www.google.co.uk

you should so something like this :
E:\Documents and Settings\Carl>tracert www.google.co.uk

Tracing route to www.l.google.com [66.249.87.99]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms SpeedTouch.lan [192.168.12.11]
2 17 ms 18 ms 16 ms lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
3 22 ms 22 ms 21 ms ge1-0-0-204.ptn-gw1.plus.net [84.92.3.105]
4 16 ms 16 ms 17 ms ge0-0-0-22.pte-gw1.plus.net [212.159.4.9]
5 15 ms 16 ms 16 ms t2a4-ge4-0-1.uk-lon1.eu.bt.net [166.49.211.133]

6 16 ms 15 ms 16 ms t2c2-ge7-3.uk-lon1.eu.bt.net [166.49.135.114]
7 16 ms 15 ms 17 ms t2a1-ge7-1.uk-lon1.eu.bt.net [166.49.135.110]
8 17 ms 17 ms 17 ms 195.66.224.125
9 18 ms 17 ms 18 ms 66.249.87.99

Trace complete.

see my line no.2
" 2 17 ms 18 ms 16 ms lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]"

shows i am on ptn-ag2

Hope that helps, post your complete tracert if you are confused ill help you out

I think PN may be having another 'issue' - just checked the speedtest domain and got 1840kbps, about 1600 on Plusnets and a stunning 48kbps on ADSL Guide...

Looking at some traceroutes it looks like the delay is on my initial connection into PN and gets worse as it goes through PN's network:

I notice though that as usual the fault status page shows no faults Sad.

The allocation of users to a gateway is done in a round robin fashion so user 1 gets gateway 1, 2 gets 2, 3 gets 3, 4 gets 4, 5 gets 1 etc etc.

So the only way of changing is to disconnect and reconnect until you get a different gateway - very hit and miss.

For PN: Are you having speed/routing issues tonight given I know my exchange/line etc isn't at fault but traffic outside of PN is slower than dialup and internally isn't too hot either.

Yeh if you are having a problem the latency on the first external hop is usally high. Disconnect/Reconect to get onto the good gateways ive listed above.

Mines okay pings are 17ms ish and speed is full using gateway ptn-ag2

Good luck Sad

I have but ended up back on the dodgy one after using BT's speedtester...

Though the speed wasn't much better on the other gateways (actually I've used all 4 tonight - all pretty poor).

strathbungo: Did you change your router to login to the speedtest@speedtest_domain login (think those are right).

Yeah but even then FF was saying the connection was reset by the server, I tired one of the other ip addresses and it worked! Using a PN connection and the Speedtest login I got a result at line speed so I assume the ADSLGuide Tester was a bit slow
