Speed-less, disconnections and things that make you go ooooh

Hey guys and girls – I’ve just raised the following as a ticket – but I thought I’d post it here also as this is a great community and I’m sure if there’s anything glaringly obvious – it’ll be flagged here before the ticket even gets read…

Dear Plus.net,

PLEASE can someone tell me what’s gone wrong? I can’t get through on the phone and the Broadband Fault Checker falls over before I can complete it.

All was fine on the 4th September. I was connected at 2.2MB and my download speeds were always 220-ish kbps with large files etc.At this time my connection dropped – not entirely unusual – it normally drops once a day, and is guaranteed to be ‘deaded’ overnight if I schedule my downloads… When it reconnected a few minutes later it was 5.9MB. Well, if I wasn’t suitably impressed!

I immediately updated my MSN screen-name to reflect how happy I was with Plus.net and that all my friends should join and I had a blisteringly fast download speed!

The next obvious thing was to go to the Speed Test page to see how fast my baby was running! Lo and behold, the results were… crap to say the least. ‘There must be something amiss!’ I thought to myself out loud. :? I headed on over to ADSLGuide and tried their speed test. It was coming back at around 1.5MB.

Hmm… Strange.

So, I immediately tried several other things. Recreated my connection on XP. No joy. Reinstalled my firewall. No joy. Disabled my firewall. No joy. Reinstalled my broadband modem. No joy. Disabled my modem… only kidding.

Nothing seemed to work.

And then came the plague of the disconnections. It just came out of nowhere. I wasn’t expecting it – didn’t see it coming and didn’t have time to duck or phone my girlfriend to say goodbye.

It just hit me. Link to Plus.net failed. Ouch. Evil

A quick check of my Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem revealed the power light was on but the sync light was flickering like a fairy light for a few seconds before snapping back to life.

I’d try to reconnect to be slapped across the face with Error 680. No dial tone. Surely there must be a cable hanging out I thought. A quick check revealed that this was indeed not the case. I picked up the phone to see if I’d been cut off and this was not the case either. Dialling tone as healthy sounding as a… well, healthy dialling tone I guess.

So, I clicked reconnect a few times to be slapped across noth cheeks with Error 680.

But then – light at the end of the tunnel. Error 734. The PPP link control protocol was terminated. Hurrah. Perhaps.

I used to work in Internet Tech Support a LONG time ago for V*rg* and I know that as soon as you get a NEW error message you’re making progress.

Alas, my faith was rewarded. I only got the Error 734 once. I clicked connect and it connected. However, now it was down at a paltry 3.9MB. Shame.

So this goes on and on and on.

Except, occasionally I do get back to about 4.3MB connected at But my download SPEEDS are always awful. Is this how it is? I’m exactly 1350km away from my exchange as the crow flies. Surely that’s manageable?

• Why do my speeds suck?

• Why am I always disconnected?

• Why can I NEVER get through on the phone anymore?

And reading the forums, does ANYONE like Plus.net anymore? :?: :?: :?:

Going through my OLD tickets, I used to LOVE this company and the Customer Service was fantastic. I’d get personal replies from people that cared.

But I know as well as most that taking on other suppliers and mergers and supporting other companies etc takes it’s toll. Neon hippo anyone? Shockedops:

You NEED to make sure YOUR customers are always top of the tree and never have it so that they suffer at the expense of making a quick buck.

Yada yada yada, anyway – can anyone help?

I’ll add some of my diagnostic type data in a min before you ask for it – hope that helps!

Cheers!

Jason

It's less than the recommended 2km that I hear bandied around.

And it certainly doesn't explain why this nightmare all of a sudden since Saturday or Sunday or whenever it all died on me.

I don't recall any earth tremors between here and my exchange since then...

I just want my 2.2MB back with stability and if it's not too much to ask for - maybe another MB or 2 on top....!?

Very well spotted at this late hour! In that case - I revoke what I said about earth tremors.

*Ahem* I mean 1.35km... Shockedops:

Not at all - I totally agree. Hence the subtle humour of my post when really I'm despairing a tad.

I'm thinking about a mass strike where we ALL cancel our Direct Debits for one month. Hehe.

Speed-less, disconnections and things that make you go ooooh

I see from your upstream speeds that you appear to be on the business Datastream version of MaxDSL but I also see that you're using a USB Speedtouch which is not the best of devices for use with MaxDSL-- some have found them adequate but you would be better advised to use a good router/modem and also to make sure your microfilters are up to the task that the higher speed connection imposes on them

You should find useful information on how your synch rate, stable rate and maximum data rate are related at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/newsarchive.asp?item=2622 but you need to be aware that the maximum data rate is just what it says-- the maximum! Actual downloads and speedtests will be less than it and since many customers of PlusNet and BT are now using high speed MaxDSL connections with no bandwidth increase, contention seems to have worsened substantially lowering achieved download rates accordingly

Disconnections and dropouts could be due to things happening between the exchange and PlusNet's equipment but is most likely to be due to the way things function on your own premises or to issues with the line between your premises and the exchange

I would have said that you ought to be able to synch reliably at 8128Kbps with a Stable Rate of 8000Kbps and an IP Data Rate of 7.15Mbps but that depends on the things mentioned in the previous paragraph being sorted

Hey Gerry - thank you very much for your reply. I'm away from home at the moment but I'll get back soon and get onto that link to see what other factors come into play. I haven't given up all hope just yet. Cheers mate! Jason
