Speed Question

On BT line MaxDSL is this normal: A stable rate (meansurement from the thing on this site) of 8000, but actual speeds (again measured on this site) of between 3 and 6 MB.

Never 7 or 8, and usually 3-5, only occasionally 6.

Will it improve, what I can or PN do if anything to get the best out of this?

Does it really make any difference changing your wiring? And can I tell if this is worthwhile by measuring line noise stats - where do I do that?

Thanks. Smiley

Speed Question

BT have not upgraded their backhaul from the exchange so ‘contention’ on MaxDSL is far more obvious.

Expect speeds to be 1-3.5Mb at peak times and 3-6.5Mb at other times.

Personally I have had the whole range at peak times 500k to 6.5Mb. Unfortunately this is how it will be for all of us on 100% BT exchanges.

Until BT do something about the backhaul capacity expect things to get worse and that’s for all ISP’s not just PN. Those fortunate enough to be on LLU enabled exchanges might be better off until such time as their backhaul is overloaded.

Speed Question

Thank you. That is very helpful. Smiley

Where can I see statts for my line noise and so on that I see others quoting?

Oh, what is the exact definition of "backhaul" ?

Speed Question

Things should improve when BT get round to replacing their existing DSLAMS and things with the new multi-service access nodes (MSANS) which at least can handle 40Gbps throughputs.

I think they have just started (as it's BT about to start) on the Cardiff exchanges.

Anyone know for certain ?

Speed Question

Basically its the connection between your local exchange and BT's network BEFORE it gets to PN.

This link tells you how it all works.

If you let us know what modem you have someone should be able to tell you how to get to the noise figures etc.

Speed Question

but dl is all due to the site bandwidth

Speed Question

woteva,
have you read http://portal.plus.net/central/forums/viewtopic.php?t=43016

it might (and I mean might) be worth experimenting with your own modem.
