Spam/Email Deliverables Update Part II

Morning all,

Just a quick post to let you know that I've just posted a (rather lenghty) update to the spam deliverables article I published a couple of weeks ago on the Community Site.

There's a recap on the deliverables, details regarding what we've rolled out over the last 7 days and further information on some of the things we're considering for the future.

I'd recommend that anyone who's posted to the forums about spam over the last few weeks takes look.

The article can be found here.

Try to keep any questions to this thread and we'll do our best to answer them.

Kind Rgds,

Bob Pullen

Bob,

You talk of blocking mail with subject lines containing one of a list of words.... does this mean for everyone, or just those who have SPAM filtering turned on... and do you mean block or tag?

In regards to the new block lists I presume these will be applied to all mail...? Will there be an appropriate 550 error message that would inform any legitmate correspondent as to the reason and the remedy (ie register your IP as a mail server)

The blocking by subject line is at our perimeter and is set at the ACLs before the mail hits our incoming mail servers - so therefore it takes effect for everyone.

We're rejecting the mail with a 501 : "This message has been identified as Spam by the administrator".

Is that 501 error just for the subject line rejection?

Its not appropriate in the case of the pbl for example which should offer a route to suppress the IP from the block list.

The 501? Yes it is only for the Subject Line Rejection.

I got a spam with 'Wundercum' in the subject line today (u not o).

Maybe that's one to add to the subject blocking list?

Hmm, had you (or anyone else for that matter) seen any spams with this spelling before?

Spam/Email Deliverables Update Part II

I've just done a search through Mail's junk folder (from before turning on PN's auto spam deletion) and there were three, all recent: one on the 8th, 9th and 12th of July.

Ah, at least the spammers aren't reading our blogs to see what we are doing to combat the spam.

Postmaster

Previously PNet insisted on sending all email notification of "pending payment" to the postmaster@ email address. Is this still the case or can I actually specify where this goes now ? (if so where?) Your blog mentions that if I have a postmaster alias I can send it somewhere else. I don't want to have a postmaster alias since it provides the spammers with a valid address to get mail through on.

TIA

Spam/Email Deliverables Update Part II

I have today received an untagged email with the following subject - 'intensified orgasms, rock hard erections, powerful ejaculations and enhanced fertility' and the word 'wondercum' in the body of the message. Only the words 'rock','hard' and 'powerful' were picked up in the header. It was marked as 1 in 147 chance of being spam - surely not.

I'm not sure if this is a new one, but I got some spam yesterday with the subject heading 'bla' that contained hardcore porn images.

I've now turned on the 'show all messages in plain text' option in OE to prevent this stuff automatically previewing, but it's a very worrying trend.

I also received this message on Monday 16th July and took the same evasive action - as you said 'a very worrying trend'.

I'd like a reply on this too. I have now stopped using my PN email addresses altogether but have to keep monitoring my account because of the payment messages to the postmaster address. I could go through the hassle of setting up a payg account and then switching that with my current one but it would be much easier just to set up a different alias that pn can contact me on.
