It was the same yesterday. Lots of pages won't load in the browser. It's only happened since Maxxing. Actually getting a reported 2.3Mbps just now but it took 30 seconds to draw the speed test results page.

It did get better yesterday evening, but I too am seeing the sluggish ping on the first hop, with an average of 120ms versus 15-25ms for all the other hops.

My first hop is subtly different at lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net

Same as asimons.
I'm on ptn-ag2, with first hop around 100 ms and subsequents around 20-30 ms.
Also, portal navigation is particularly turgid at the moment.
I had no problems last night on ptn-ag2.

Same here.

Besides my router being pathetic in the art of a quick first ping the first hop is somehow worrying.

Slow ping first hop to PlusNet

I've raised this through to our networks team, so that they can investigate it. Though in the short term the best advice is the old disconnect for a couple of minutes and then reconnect, as this should bounce you onto another gateway.

Slow ping first hop to PlusNet

Hi John - really appreciate your input.

But I'm having a real problem with this plus net approach of recomending a restart to get onto a different gateway for many different issues. It seems I have been reading about this approach for months. This seems like a really half baked sticking plaster fix. Hang on - it seems like it because it is.

Why can plusnet not fix the gateways so that they ALL work at full performance?

What does this say about your attitude to those who don't visit the forums, and don't realise that this is what they must do to get a good connection? Do you expect them to continue to pay for a substandard service?

Why should I HAVE to work out what is a "good" gateway, and then restart my router to try to get onto it?

All ISP's are allowed to have things go wrong. What I really don't like is the consistant refusal to fix things properly, and to rely on these - frankly - unprofessional workarounds.

Slow ping first hop to PlusNet

Thanks Jon

However, I just hopped from ag1 to ag2 and improved to 95ms pings. This is the second evening running.

I'm cool about it though - a chance to nip to Tesco IRL. Wink

Slow ping first hop to PlusNet

Jon,

We all have got slightly different gateways I think

smpclough> lo0-plusnet.thn-ag1.plus.net

tomspcs ( me ) > lo0-plusnet.pte-ag2.plus.net

brandon2 > ptn-ag2

asimons > lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net

disley > lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag1.plus.net

So far

PTN 1 & 2
PTE 2
THN 1

Appear to be affected. Something tells me that PTE 1 might also be affected Wink (unless I am barking up the wrong tree in which case forgive me)

My recommendation to disconnect for a few minutes isn't intended to be a long term fix to the problem, more of a quick way to improve things whilst a real solution is worked on.

At the moment people are seeing latency on a couple of the gateways, but this isn't something that is going to be resolved straight away, as it will take investigation to determine what is causing it before we can resolve it fully.

Funny. This was reported yesterday evening

Yet you are still in the "investigation" stage.
