Slow browsing in afternoons and evenings

Hi,

My browsing has become very sluggish over the last week or so.

I'm on PlusNet Business Premier up to 8Mb. Usage so far: 145MB peak / 510MB off-peak.

Latest figures on http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ taken today at 08:15 am

Download Speed: 1441 kbps (180.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 406 kbps (50.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Line stats: Down:3776K Up: 704K

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
Date 20/03/07 08:18:50
Speed Down 1391.00 Kbps ( 1.4 Mbps )
Speed Up 528.11 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )

Has anyone else seen slow browsing. www.bbc.co.uk for example takes 1 second to download now. In the afternoon, it takes well over 5 seconds, which is annoying when page hopping.

My upload speed never gets above 0.5Mbps, even though it should go up to 832K (syncing at 732 mainly). I use a VPN, so need upload speed as well.

SNR always sits around 10, Loss = 50db. I believe the line is interleved.

What is the status of your exchange shown http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

It will be Green or Red, Red means it is a busy exchange and BT will have a date for when they will upgrade equipment at the exchange to cope with demand.

Looks like you have had a bad sync over the last few days, BTW have reduced the speed profile on your line to 1500.
If you continue to sync at 3776 as you are now then your profile will update to 3000, this change normally takes 3-5 days of sycning at a higher speed.

Why have you reduced my speed profile when I report a speed problem?

My line always used sync around 4MB download and 732K upload, SNR10, Loss:51db.

I'm seeing that on the router now.

Is there anything you can do to also boost the upload speed? It never seems to go above 0.5Mbps where it is syncing at 0.732mbps

232K is doing somewhere else, or is the exchange limiting it?

We aren't reducing it, this is the way MAX dsl works, if the BT equipment detects a poor sync speed it will reduce the profile on the line to keep a stable connection. If the connection syncs higher for 3-5 days then the profile increases again.

What results does a bt speedtest give you/.

IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 704 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3776 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Slow browsing in afternoons and evenings

*Sigh*

Looks like it might be "one of those".

BT's other reporting system is showing your line as being profiled to 1728Kbps since midnight today. I'd take the figure I've posted here rather than the BT Speedtester in this instance.

If your sync rate remains consistently higher for the next 3 days, your speeds will pick up again.

Slow browsing in afternoons and evenings

Is there any way the "other" speed from BT could be made visible on the portal?

Ok. I'll keep an eye on it.

When my browsing speed drops, it drops to the same speed as my P.C. + GPRS data card provides though, so my line must be dropping quite low.

Still rubbish speeds:

IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 704 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3776 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2288 kbps

I have rebooted daily for days and always get 3776. Why am I still stuck at 2500kbps?

I cannot get better upload than 500kbps, ever! Where is the extra 200kbps going? can't be overheads surely.

Also, more often than not, I get slow web browsing, so either the DNS is sluggish or some kind of http "behind the scenes" proxy or throttling is taking place.
