Slow FTP

For a while now my FTP sites are real slow, downloading seems fine when it gets going but the problem is uploading and navigating. It takes 5 seconds just to navigate into new folders and carry out commands like renaming, and uploads are around 10kb/s.

I did a traceroute and got this:

5 ge-4-1.metro2-londencyh00.london1.level3.net (212.113.11.41) 38.259 ms 43.410 ms 40.387 ms
6 so-1-2-0.gar2.london1.level3.net (212.113.0.11Cool 37.974 ms 44.169 ms 38.629 ms
7 ae-29-56.ebr2.london1.level3.net (4.68.116.190) 47.093 ms * *
8 * * *
9 ae-2.ebr1.newark1.level3.net (4.69.132.9Cool 111.168 ms 109.819 ms 120.732 ms

To be honest, I know not much what this stuff means, but understand the *** indicates there's a problem. Anything that can be done to improve this?

Slow FTP

Hi,

The trace may or may not indicate the cause of the problem, certainly packets timing out aren't a good thing but they may not necessarily mean that there's anything wrong (some routers set responding to ping as the lowest priority and dedicate run time to routing traffic so some pings may just get dropped when it's busy).

As a comparison have you tried uploading to your PlusNet webspace (ftp.plus.net)?

Slow FTP

Hi

FTP.plus.net is lighting fast, I can navigate folders as if they were on my hard drive almost.

I have a bunch of servers in the US and some in manchester and all these, in comparison are dog slow.

So, I'm slightly confused where the problem is?

Slow FTP

Does it make any difference if you try at a different time of day (e.g. peak and off peak)? Are you using the same FTP client and connecting to the same port on the other servers as you just tried with the PlusNet server?

Are you able to try any other FTP servers? e.g. ftp.microsoft.com or try the servers you use from elsewhere?

Difficult to say exactly what the cause is, could be the server, the route to the server, the traffic being misidentified or something else.

My mum who lives over the road has Bulldog, I went over today with the same laptop and the difference is amazing!!!

All my FTP sites are lightening fast, I come straight back home and back on plusnet it's slow as treacle. Traceroutes show no probems over on bulldog either.

And btw, it doesn't make any difference what time of day.

What exactly can I do about this? really dissapointing.

Slow FTP

I've had a ticket open on the issue for a couple of weeks now. UPLOADS on various protocols are being throttled or managed by the Ellacoyas even though they shouldn't be.
I setup an FTP server on my home machine and had James (Mr Bailey of Plusnet that is) test out the upload speed and his download speed was terrible, therefore proving something is horribly wrong with uploads.

Just testing my FTP upload again right now gives 3.04KB/sec. I think I'll go update my ticket.

At least I know it definitely not my end now. So thanks for posting hoice Smiley

Think I'm due another long night Smiley

I'll try and do some testing when I get in from the office.

So has this got anything to do with these traceroutes?

Almost every site I traceroute has *, and it's always on level3.net. The traceroutes I did from the bulldog account had none of these.

re FTP, seem to be stuck at around 10kb/sec upload. Browsing is the worst though, having to wait 5 seconds after every command is so annoying.

That's cross-atlantic (hence the >100ms hops).

Do you get similar with UK FTP sites?

it seems so.

I only have one UK server, and that's in London(not manchester as I thought) and it too is really really slow.

FTP.bbc.co.uk is really slow, every one I try from here is the same http://www.ftp-sites.org/anonymous_ftp_sites_list_uk_1.html

ftp.plus.net is great though.

Slow FTP

Currently FTP for Broadband Premier is in Silver, with internal FTP being Gold, hence the improved speeds you'll be seeing.

Silver traffic shouldn't be giving a dire service though. Like I said, I'll have a play tonight. Seeing as I don't have a life Smiley

So premier is on silver? what has to happen for one to get on 'gold'..?

sounds like a debarkle.

Gold on PAYG is not all it's cracked up to be. I've been having a problem with VPN dropping out - details here. As part of the diagnostics, all my traffic has been moved up to Titanium. So far I am seeing fewer problems with the VPN - but browsing etc. seems much smoother.

Slow FTP

I've had slow uploads on FTP for months, to plusnet space and personal space, raised a ticket and all I got was "We're looking into it", never resolved.
