Why was the 'service status' phone line not available to tell customers of the service outage? Evil

Because the phone system is located in Telehouse.

'Service Status' phoneline

I think we should see the service status phone line seperated to an entirely different platform - similar to servicestatus.net.

As an IT Manager I can see very clearly how its impossible to plan for EVERY situation, especially when you are buying co-located space in a facility - you have to rely for a large part on your chosen datacentres resilience.
Whilst its possible (EDIT - essential) to work with your suppliers to ensure that as many points of failure are covered - its pretty difficult to have everything go according to plan in these situations.

What is unacceptable is the lack of clear, easy to find, easy to understand, information on what the situation is.
Even if the only info is that "we know theres a big issue - we don't know exactly what it is, or how long it'll last, but we're working on it" would be useful.
Its surely not hugely difficult or expensive to arrange an independant service status channel.
