SPAM E-mails

Im sick to death of getting basically the same e-mail about 12 times a day!! I have the SPAM feature on the highest setting yet they are still coming through unmarked as SPAM.

The top part of the e-amil comes through as an image so not even any message rules in outlook can get rid of it. The text at the bottom of the e-mail is just random rubbish and they come from a different source each time.

Is there any tried and tested way to stop this?

Cheers

SPAM E-mails

Hi,

We've recently made some changes to the Spam checker so that you can train it if mails aren't being marked as spam when they should (and vice versa), details are on the following help page.

http://www.plus.net/support/email/email_security/spam_guide.shtml#5

The more spam messages we receive the better we can train the spam filter at marking spam.

Could someone explain the difference between PN's spam filters and, say, Hotmails.
Ive had the same free hotmail account for at least 5 years, my email address is all over the net, yet i recieve no more than 1 or 2 spam e-mails a week and they are correctly identified and placed in the junk mail folder every time.
How hard is it to get a correctly working Spam Filter?

I get the exact same spam mails as well, but hopefully I'm about to 'blackhole' them Wink

I thought the different level settings went out ages ago and that spam checking was either on or off.

I've been forward loads of messages similar to the one shown at the top and I'm not seeing any improvement in the detection rate.

I've just received the Messagelabs October report which highlights a large increase in spam levels - interesting reading:

I get the very same spam as well. It's a right bugger.

Yeah the three different levels are all just the same setting - On.

May take a while to build up a picture of the spam, one of the problems is that the spammers are always changing what they do so catching the spam is going to a game of catchup.

SPAM E-mails

I did read in some MS Exchange forum I post in, that the spammers are now using a different type of message, that might just take a small while for hte anti spam programmes/companies to catch up on.
I admit, I did see an increase on My mail server (don't go via plusnet for this) but once my anti spam definitions was updated, I catch most of it now.

What spam definitions do you use I wonder?

---

In answer to the other question, Hotmail basically manage in two ways: They block a shed load of legitimate email too, and they have a very big team of people sifting through the emails people report as junk and programming their filters appropriately.

We are starting to go down those routes, but we've always erred on the side of delivering mail addressed to people rather than rejecting it, because that seemed to make sense. We could make things tighter, but invariably when we do, there will be occasions where genuine email from a customer of another ISP can't be received (Just like when customers of other ISPs can't receive mail from our users due to a blacklist). It's tough finding the right balance.

I have my own Exchange 2003 server (SP2) & that comes with the Intelligent Message Filter, & with a minor reg hack, it updates when you go to Microsoft update (better than going to windows update). You just dial in the SCL & UCE level you want (mine is at 6 & 5) & hey presto, nearly no spam.
