Router - Data connection disconnects sporadically

Hi,

Has anyone got any idea why I keep losing my connection?
I have Belkin ADSL 802.11g router which has 4 ADSL lights
1) Pwr which is always on
2) Syn which is always on
3) Data which sporadically disconnects and goes out
4) WLAN which is always on

When I get the disconnection the Data light is out. I presume this means I have lost connection but if I wait 10 - 15 minutes it comes back on. If I switch the router off and back on I seem to get a quicker connection but not always.
Sometimes it takes 20 - 30 connection requests before I get back on.

This is very frustrating.

Can anyone help?

I have raised a My help with Tech support but they have insisted on a daytime number but seeing as I work I will not be connected to help if they want a description of the problem.

Thanks
Bpcy

Do you have any modem logs you can look through to see whats happening?

Oh, and can you check what gateway you are connected to...

Thanks Sophos9.

Here's the result

Which gateway
You are currently connected to the "Telehouse North, Juniper 1" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as ptn-ag1.

Router - Data connection disconnects sporadically

No probs...

The PN platform is unbalanced at the minute due to a failed network card, AG1 is currently carrying the bulk of users.

Has this problem only just started tonight?

No I have had the problem for about 1 year but as I don't use the Internet much except for email I have not reported it until today.

You know the data light flashes in correspondence with data throughput, if there is not data throughput... the light should be out!

No sorry I am a Tech dunce...

My other half (and children) know about this sort of thing.
I'm just learning.

I did'nt know that the data light only lights up when there is data passing through it, but this leads to a question of why it is lit up when the PC is switched off?
The Router data light can be on for 15 - 20 minutes but the PC is switched off.
Is it doing some sort of connection test or something?

Thanks

The router will still be receiving and sending data, its an in dependant unit

May be worth a flick through the instructions... Wink

Router - Data connection disconnects sporadically

Hi,

Do you have any idle timeout settings in the router? Looking at your connection logs there are a lot of short connections showing each time disconnecting by "user request", i.e. your router is dropping the connection for some reason.

The most likely cause is an idle timeout setting within the router's setup page. Worth checking through to see if this is set, if you're not sure where it may be if you post the router model number we should be able to find it.

If it's all OK then we can check this without a daytime number, in the fault checker it will ask what time you are available just list the best times.

More like I'll ask my Hubby to explain.
I can't make any sense of those manuals as it's all goobledy gook!!!!

I wonder if he can explain why its on for say 15 minutes comunicating and sending data.
Where is it sending data to?
And what is it receiving?
Why does it take 15 - 20 minutes when the PC is switched off?
Why when we try connecting with Internet Explorer does it fail to connect several times or until we switch the router off and then on again?

I'm not sure if he is that technical to answer these!
Maybe the children...

But thanks for your help.

Can't be sure why it's sending/receiving data when the PC is off, but one reason is that it may just be background traffic. Whenever the router is connected to the Internet there will be small amounts of background traffic from virus infected PCs, port scans and other traffic. Most of which is harmless and just bounces off your router's firewall, but may cause the data light to flash.

Depends how much it is flashing if this is the case or not.

As to why it doesn't work when you open Internet Explorer, if my thinking above is right then the connection has disconnected itself. If you have an idle timeout set then it may be that the router is disconnecting the connection after you've finished using it, then when you come back to it it needs to reconnect but needs a reboot or clicking "connect" a few times to get this to happen.
