Random Disconnections

Hi all,

Is anyone getting random disconnections all the time. I've had it in the past couple of months where I'm online downloading or playing a game or even just on MSN. It happens every 15mins or so during peak time and every couple of hours during off-peak. I've updated my drivers, got new cables, borrowed my friends filters and its still happening.

Any suggestions Plusnet?

Thanks

an could ye be tellin us what type of modem ye have installed. Is it one of those pesky USB type?

If so ye could be having the 'ol USB power problem that plagues the Internet community.

aaaahhh Mr Soundsystem sirrr

the insurance depends on what type of 'ol tub ye have and the condition of yer motley crew.

For ye of a disconnecting disposition ye should try te USB powered hub trick to see if it solves the bedevilled power motherboard curse.

'Tis one also associated with a line upgrade as well since current pulled from ye mother's board is proportional to ye line speed and can cause ye mother's board to trip its softyware ffuse should ye current go past 500mA.

'tis a well known curse.

yeah i have a USB modem. Alcatel 330. Wanadoo gave it to me when I first got broadband...and then I joined PlusNet and kept using that modem. You think I need a new modem? Because, i mean, I didnt have this problem with Wanadoo. Thanx for replies all!

As people have said, it may be that the higher speed is drawing more more from your USB connection.

For clarification, is it plugged into the motherboard or a powered hub? If it's the former and you dont fancy a new modem, I suggest a powered USB hub Smiley

It's plugged straight into my motherboard. I do have 2MB and I do download quite a lot...touching speeds of 220kb/s sometimes.

Does that mean that my modem is requiring more power than my motherboard can give? and therefore, the USB modem cuts off?

My router is mains powered and i have only been getting this problem for the last week or so, if its keeps happening i shall try my old usb modem and see if that helps.

hawarkarem - that could indeed be the problem, but there's no guarentees, someone else may offer an alternative solution Smiley
