i found this interesting speed checker
http://www.rasp.org.uk/myspeed/index.html

QoS = 98%
Round trip 35ms
Max pause = 281ms

nice speeds tho!
981kbps Down
231kbps Up

for a 1Mbit

I only got 94% QOS
But Round trip 11ms
Max Pause 16ms
Down 7.73Mbps
Up 472Kbps

I don't understand the results
Download speed 1.06 Mbps (1Mb line)
Upload speed 230 kbps
Round trip time 3 ms
Max Pause 438 ms
But QOS only 65%

Ill look forward to testing this on my connection when I get home...

The results will depend on whether my echange is having a sleep at the time.

Last night ranged from 16 kilobits (2kb/s) up to a speed usable to search and read the internet.

Its like a lucky dip when I get home, will it work, wont it work... All adds to the spice of life!

What exactly does this test and subsequent results show?

you might well have fast speeds and low pings, but the Qulity of the broadband service is low, I'm not to sure how they come up with that fact,

@jim
The speeds are fine, if there over your line speed, its just a little data error!
The QoS is 65% ! Shocking,
Is your broadband ok or bad?

Anyone else know?

QOS appears to be related to the max pause but I don't understand the significance of that

Interesting speed checker.
On 2Mb line:
download 1.95Mbs
upload 213Kbps
quality 98%
round trip time 32ms
max pause 16ms

Just found another site which is much more informative but gives a little better results

If the QoS relates to the max pause, then how come i got a reali big pause time but 98% QoS?

Could it be down to a packet flow system, to check how meny packets we're returned undelivered (e.g Timed out)

Stats now:
QoS : 94%
Rnd trip : 31Ms
Max pause: 234ms

Stats with Jim's Test:
Dl: 997.2kbps
Ul: 254.8Kbps

RTT: Min=47 Max=172 Avg=108
QoS = Dl = 98% ul = 100%
Max pause = 47

Strange - when I experience my shocking speeds, (which is clearly the exchange or some BT part at fault)

When I ping anything, the response times are excellent. 10-20 ms to bbc for example, but try going to the BBC site, and its at best 2kb a second, normally about 0.5kb/s

Try again an hour later and its fine...

So I dont quite know how this QoS thing works, as surely it can just measure ping and speed?

I believe QOS is a measure of dropped packets (how much re-transmission is required).
TCP/IP is actualy 2 protocols.
IP, or Internet Protocol, is about sending packets of data with no guarantee that it will arrive at the destination.
TCP, or Transmission Control Protocol, is about assembling streams of data at the destination in the correct order using IP packets. Dropped packets are spotted and re-transmission is requested.

One of the tricks that the Ellacoyas use to throttle performance is to simply drop IP packets if things are busy, knowing that TCP will catch this and recover on its own.

The shocking

its like saying, if the postman is busy, he won't deliver your post but just send them back to the poster, to re-send!

i'm happy with 98% QoS
Fingers crossed it'll stay like that or improve!

Interesting - just tried it on another PC off the same router but with a much shorter network cable and got a Qos of 96% and max pause of 60.
Will recheck on this machine after a few minutes but it looks as though I need to look at my cabling.
I wonder if the fact that it goes right past the subwoofer and is also coiled up due to excessive cable length is a factor - investigation is called for.

Just ran another test from usual machine which gave Qos download 98% and upload 100% but the original test still only gives 65%.
Think I will just ignore it as I haven't been getting any problems Smiley

Ethernet cable only starts to show poor performance after 15 or 25 Meters or the cable inside is broken/dodgy!

Best bet is to use WiFi or Shorter cables.

And nyes, subwoofers have HUGE magnetts and will interfear with the cable
