I tried to use your postcode finder and was unsuccessful., so I carried out a few tests on my own postcode.

This is RG9 4QD
The correct response to this search should be:-
Rotherfield Greys, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire.

Your search response is:-
,HENLEY ON THAMES Oxfordshire

it seems that you are truncating the first part of the address. Perhaps you could check it.

This just looks like the way data is stored in the DB.

From tests on it myself, I can see that most results consist of 4 Parts. These are formatted

D, C, B, A

A = Postcode
B = County
C = Town
D = Street

Not all of these are present in the UK postcode index. There are cases where the only item there can be is the town (rural areas of wales for example), and others include multiple road names (in which case, it can't return 1 incase it is wrong).

Here are 4 examples

LL32 8AY = Correct
LL32 8ED = Correct
LL32 8EE = Correct, though this reports a 5 part address. This is likely they way it is stored.
LL32 8LY = Correct.

Can you say what was missing from the returned information?

I have found several cases of incorrect data.

This should be

Pier Head, LIVERPOOL, Merseyside, L3 1JH

L37 2HF

Queens Road, LIVERPOOL, Lancashire, L37 2HF

Should return

The second error (formby) is major, and mail would go missing with it. However, the first wouldn't

Hi Folks,

As far as I know, the Postcode database comes straight from a CD provided by Royal mail.

What would help, is if you could try these postcodes in the first page of our singup process - Does that return the same results? I'm just wondering if we have two different databases or something.

The signup process is returning the same data.

Well, bizarre - That data come from the the 'official' postcode database, which costs thousands of pounds and is supported by Royal Mail.

We can cange this data manually if required - This needs to be requested by a Contact Us ticket though.

Without knowing what format the data comes in, I wouldn't have a clue, if or not the way you import the data is the best method.

Maybe the raw data for the erronous records in question need to be looked at, to see if or not your import tools are fault.

Have you been able to see the raw data in any way?

My guess is the data that you are provided with, is the same that is used to generate results for the post office website.

The results as noted are fine here.

AFAIK, there are two versions of the PAF (Post Office Address File). One is to premise level, the other is to street (or major thoroughfare) level. The second one is cheaper than the first, and looks like the one +net uses.

Another problem I found yesterday with the Plusnet Postcode finder is that it will not allow you to enter the house number if the street is very long and has several postcodes.

I was trying to find the code for Willows Lane Accrington and it comes up with 5 different codes. Cry

In the end I had to resort to the Royal Mail site which allowed me to include the house number and then returned just the one code.

Your postcode finder omits the locality which can be an important part of
the address.

E.g.
Search for High Street, Southampton, gives:
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2AA
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2BR
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2BS
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2BT

High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2HN
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2HP
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2JF
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2NA
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2NP
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2NR

High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO14 2PH
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 2EA
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 2ES
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 2LH
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3AA
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3DQ
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3DR
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3DS

High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3JF
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO30 3LS
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO31 4HA
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO31 4JE

High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO40 9TN
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO45 6AG
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO45 6AH
High Street, SOUTHAMPTON, Hampshire, SO45 6YW

but from the Royal Mail website:
SO14 2AA gives addresses in
High Street
SOUTHAMPTON
SO14 2AA

SO30 2EA gives addresses in
High Street
Botley
SOUTHAMPTON
SO30 2EA

SO31 4HA gives addresses in
High Street
Hamble
SOUTHAMPTON
SO31 4HA

SO40 9HL gives addresses in
High Street
Totton
SOUTHAMPTON
SO40 9HL

SO45 6AG gives addresses in
High Street
Hythe
SOUTHAMPTON
SO45 6AG

You really need to show the locality if provided as well as the post town.
Southampton, Botley, Hamble, Totton and Hythe are a few miles apart.

Your signup postcode address finder has the same problem, so if
a new user is not careful to correct the address the address for delivery of the modem will not be right.

If the delivery driver arrived at Southampton High Street, but the package
was for Botley High Street then he would have to somehow realize that the
postcode was for Botley, and then travel another 7 miles.

Yes - That is a very fair point. I have raised this as problem 14151 internally.

postcodes - metropolitan counties

Hi there,
Checking codes for my christmas cards - gave the same awkward answers as above plus more.

Since the introduction of metropolitan areas many years ago my county name changed from Staffordshire to West Midlands - as did Birmnigham's Warwickshire to West Midlands also. However the Post Code Finder is showing the old county names - this seems very odd if as is said above that the data comes direct from the Royal Mail.

I am a little confused as to where I actually live!

I wonder if my post would still be delivered if i used the old county names?
