Porn spam being sent to children

I just wonder whether anyone has ever looked into taking legal proceedings over pornographic spam being sent to their kids.

I have two children (11 and 12) and I am really tired of having to clear their email accounts of spam advertising sex toys, sex aids etc...

It strikes me that if someone sent them a similar item through the post then the sender may be committing some kind of offence against children.

Thoughts please?

Porn spam being sent to children

Hi there,

We will soon be offering the option to delete the messages marked as spam from the server automatically as opposed to moving them to the spam folder - Would this help?

I know it's not ideal, but have you considered changing your children's email addresses and settign up a new mailbox?

Why not take up the offer of another free .UK domain whilst your there and register it as something the children would like.

We'll soon be offering the facility to turn off the .plus.com email as well which might help depending on your set up.

Indeed. The problem with this though is actually tracking down the sender, which is approaching impossible Sad

Bob,

I appreciate your help but I think the issue is bigger than ISP level.

I'm resigned at the moment to checking their emails before they see them - but I'm sure some of these emails will have slipped through my net and reached their innocent young eyes.

They may now be wondering why on earth anyone would require a stronger more powerful erection or produce buckets of semen!

I think it needs someone with some money and time on their hands to get their teeth into it - and get a few of these spammers put away on paedophile charges.

(I know I'm being ridiculously optimistic!)

If people need to go this far, they may as well use a new domain and host it externally with a company that has an effective SPAM filter better than PN.

Also, you can setup gmail.com (or uk.yahoo.com) accounts for your children (you do not need to tell them), redirect their e-mail from PN to gmail.com and then use POP to retrieve the messages that will have been through the gmail.com SPAM filter which is better than PN provide.

Believe this method may run into problems if you have the return address as xyz@username.plus.com and you use googlemail servers to send. This is because googlemail use SPF, so for sending you still need to use PN servers.

The spam is a disturbing sign of the times and the same pornographic emails are now being sent to my retired fathers address following the webmail incident.

Legal proceedings against spammers would get nowhere. Even if the spam is being sent on behalf of a company you can trace, you'd never prove they sent it.

You would need to be able to find the spammer, prove it was them, and they would need to be in a legal jurisdictions that has laws in place. So unlikely.

Now I do not have children, so my suggestion may be completely chocolate teapot.

But would it be possible using mail rules to set up a whitelist of people that they can receive e-mail from. With all other e-mail being hand filtered, and where appropriate the sender being added to the white list once they have proved themselves to be trust worthy.

@chillypenguin That is not going to go down well with teenagers, the idea of an adult reading their mail at all is enough to horrify most of them. That said, uncensored access to e-mail is enough to horrify most parents.

On balance your suggestion is probably best until such time a child reaches secondary school age.

If you're dealing with that age group I'd personally set up a GMail account and simply forward mail sent to your child's PN address to the GMail account, which is then their own. The GMail spam filter, as has been said several times, is much better than the PlusNet one and should catch most spam.

In many cases children will already have personal hotmail accounts in order to use MSN Messenger (it isn't widely known you can register any address for use with this service) so you could just forward their mail there.

I'll leave the debate surrounding monitoring of childrens e-mail to others.

I was not explicit about the SMTP part you are right. Sad

So, set your client to collect from POP3 on Gmail or Yahoo, and leave your client set to send e-mail out via relay.plus.net

Its not just children.

I just can't explain to my Mother why anyone would want to send this stuff because 'surely no one wants it?'

So in the end I promptly set up a new mailbox for her. Voila, no SPAM. (We had all been clean prior to teh data theft). I then undertook to view her old address and forward real mail until she had updated everyone.

It did make me think that if I had children I probably would take it upon myself to provide a similar service until they knew and understood enough about the environment out there.

Basicaly you have to respect the fact that the Internet is a jungle. You would after all take an interest in the TV programmes or video games you children view/use.

Kind Rgds,

I may be a little naive but can I ask why? Most of these spammers emails have links to websites selling their rubbish which you can pay for with a credit card.
There has to be a record of the transaction and the account which has been paid, thus leading to the source.
