Plusnet Responce Please: Where are the Ellocoya's?

Hi, I just wanted to ask if someone from PN could tell me, looking at the traceroute bellow which is I know perfectly fine I am simply using it as an example for discussion but I would like to know between which hops are the ellocoya units installed, or which hop is the router to which they are actually connected?

Just would be interested to know, especially if ever investigating ping slowdowns that ever occur what point in the trace the ellocoyas are because that would of course provide info on their involvement/lack of involvement in the problem.

Also I presume the BT central is between 1 & 2 and that between 4 & 5 is the exit point for your network on the internet side.

I believe the ellacoyas are right at the end of the BT Central Pipes before the first hop....

Could be entirely wrong though, but I know the ellacoyas are in London...

So not only are the delay/QoS killer (this is how these things work) but they are at the oposite end of the country to the rest of the PN network :s

I really hope you are wrong Martin because if not it is not just bad configuration but insane network diversion causing issues here, London is a few hundred miles from the PN dsl gateway entry point hop 2 which would make PN either insane or incompetent to locate the ellocoyas there, I now am even more wanting to hear the PN comment on this, now I would like to know the point in the traceroute and approx geograpical location, and please tell me you did not place them in London :S

Sorry but that is incorrect. The gateways are in telehouse east and north in London, not hundreds of miles away in Sheffield as you think.

The edge routers and the gateways are all in London as can be seen from kitz's diagram here

Telehouse is the first point of contact users have with the Plusnet network. Plusnet have in the last couple of years been moving more servers to London. The cgi servers are now there, the mySQL servers in Sheffield are being retired and replaced by servers in London on 8th March, the games server was moved there this last week.

If you want to know where a server is do a tracert. This shows the difference between a London based server (cgi) and a Sheffield server (portal):
=====================================================================

>tracert ccgi.plus.net

Tracing route to ccgi.plus.net [84.92.1.4]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms dg834 [192.168.0.1]
2 14 ms 32 ms 25 ms lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
3 16 ms 12 ms 12 ms ge1-0-0-204.ptn-gw1.plus.net [84.92.3.105]
4 14 ms 13 ms 12 ms ccgi.plus.net [84.92.1.4]

Trace complete.

=====================================================================
>tracert portal.plus.net

Tracing route to portal.plus.net [212.159.8.137]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms dg834 [192.168.0.1]
2 18 ms 13 ms 15 ms lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
3 14 ms 12 ms 13 ms ge1-0-0-204.ptn-gw2.plus.net [84.92.3.106]
4 13 ms 14 ms 12 ms ge0-0-0-23.pte-gw1.plus.net [212.159.4.25]
5 19 ms 18 ms 19 ms atm1-0.ptb-gw1.plus.net [212.159.1.89]
6 19 ms 20 ms 19 ms vlan18.pri.ptb-gw4.plus.net [195.166.129.130]
7 33 ms 19 ms 19 ms if2.ptb-al1.plus.net [195.166.129.39]
8 19 ms 20 ms 20 ms portal.plus.net [212.159.8.137]
=====================================================================

The crucial bit is the atm1 (hop 5 in the second trace) which is at the end of the London/Sheffield atm link. Notice how the times jump from that point on.

Things are being moved down to London because that is the best place for them to be. The majority of our peers have equipment in London and its easier for us to pass traffic to them, and receive traffic, if things are closer together.

In the past we've had servers up in Sheffield, but as we grow this means accessing them gets a little slower during peak times.

Plusnet Responce Please: Where are the Ellocoya's?

Hi,

As for the location of the Ellacoya's. These will be located between hops 2 & 3 in the original trace in the thread. They are switches and not routers, and as such operate transparrently (aka, they don't show on traces).

Kind regards,

Plusnet Responce Please: Where are the Ellocoya's?

Does that mean that if we were to see a significant difference in the times on a tracert between hops 2 and 3 it would indicate that the Ellacoyas themselves are struggling?

not necessarily. There could be other issues that cause it as well. e.g a plusnet hamster chewing at the cables for example. or the equipment on either side causing issues.

Of course a delay there or packet loss beginning at that point could indicate ellocoyas or as srae88 said one of any number of other suspects, what it does mean is if the problems begin in a different part of the trace it is unlikly that the ellocoyas are doing it.
