PlusNet please admit that the problem with peak time speeds

So far there are currently 16 different threads all relating to speed issues that I have counted, and probably a few more that I've missed

The common theme through all of these is poor speeds during the peak hours. These users are on both BT and LLU connections and also have a mix of account products across the Plus Net product range.

Would it not be fair comment to say that with a large number of users all posting similar problems that this may well be a bigger issue?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a go at Plus Net per se, but sometimes it takes someone to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Remember the LLU disconnections issue last year?

I think PN have admitted on several occasion that they are struggling and that's why they are investing in more bandwidth

Understand the investment in more bandwidth with a new BT Central on the way, but that doesn't explain the LLU side of the problem

Hi there,

A few things to clarify:

We have said that there is a problem, and this is currently open is Service Status. Our network engineers are looking into the issues reported as a high priority.

We are investing in more bandwidth, although this is mainly for the session expansion at the moment.

We have raised speed problems as a whole to Tiscali, as the number of these reported recently (particularly when logged in with the test account details, therefore bypassing our network) have increased substantially.

I don't think there is a generic speed issue on Premier. We're seeing peak time speed issues on Plus accounts, and nothing to the same scale on Premier.

LLU is obviously unrelated.

The service status mentions nothing about Premier accounts, which as I understand it http traffic is silver, but it is good to see that something is being done behind the scenes for the LLU speed issue, even if there is no service status for this.

Hi there,

Http on an unmanaged Premier account should be in Gold at all times.

James

In my view there is a problem with silver traffic on Premier which starts at approx 1pm until 11pm daily. If you think 9kb/s is an acceptable speed for silver traffic then please would you get Neil Armstrong to come on here and confirm that.

It is only just over a month ago when it was stated that 100kb/s was a target acceptable minimum speed for silver traffic on premier.

We're making various tweaks to the network currently, to try and make various improvements in customer experience. I can't give a guarantee/expectation on Silver traffic currently.

Either way, there's no way that this will be looked at until the problems being reported with http speeds are fixed.

How we laughed.....

Average usage of about 4gb per month (yeah, I know I'm on the wrong account, can't be link:censored to change - they'd only screw it up)

Speeds during the evening are pony (yeah, I know I should raise a ticket, can't be link:censored to go through two weeks of purgatory before they tell me there isn't a problem)

Speeds improve after midnight just as I'm going to bed (my exchange is Green, and my neighbours on other ISP's from the same exchange are powering along like link:censored off a shovel 24X7)

Connection drops with depressing predictability at about half past the hour several times each evening (no, there isn't a lamppost near my house, we don't have a flashing set of Christmas lights running, and the heating doesn't kick in and out every hour).

Same old same old. Too many customers, not enough bandwidth, and a naive reliance on the Ellacoyas to provide yet another challenge which will enable the PN Ellacoya team to become field experts.

And skip the "jam tomorrow" stuff about the bandwidth increase, I've been listening to it for two years. I watched the Ian/James video from PUG (fire alarm and all), and while interesting at some levels, and while they're both undoubtedly very nice guys, I didn't come away from it feeling that my customer experience was going to be enhanced - rather I felt that the lads were looking forward to having new toys to play with. Ho hum.

The balloons look nice, and some of us have opened a book on when the first drink will be poured...... have a good party.

Appalling bandwidth in Peak hours ...

... another voice of discontent I'm afraid - tried raising fault but the speed tester actually passed (God knows how - bizarre?).

But my experience of the service over 13 months suggests something is now very wrong - unable to get decent sustained download speeds all week .
100MB file downloads should take ~ 40 minutes on my 1 Mbit Premier connection - last night one took >4 hours !!!

I expect > 110kbytes/sec peak from my 1Mbit link at > 4km from BT exchange, but currently 1 moment download manager reports 40-85kbytes/sec peak , the next 0 bytes/sec for long periods. I'm the only active user btw.

Different sites and downloads exhibit the same patchy sluggish behaviour - dodgy router in BT infrastructure I reckon (I've self-tested mine and the figures seem fine)

I'll switch providers if this keeps up ...
